Hello everyone :)

I need some advice on my Bear :)  My family is one of the victims of the economy and had to downsize not by choice.  So anyways, we have found a temporary apartment to live in with Bear (thank goodness!).  We did live in a house previously, so no one really complained about his barking if we were not home.  Since we have moved to the apartment, Bear is barking at every noise which I know is because he is protecting us and is nervous of the new place.  No one has complained about his barking yet and our neighbor is so understanding and has told us how is feels sorry for him since this is a big change for him.  She says he mostly has a nervous bark.

Long story short, I do not want to get anyone annoyed with his barking and realize he needs to become accustom to the noises, but I am worried.  We do have a radio on during the day, but I really do not think it is helping him any.

Does anyone have any ideas?  He is crated because he will destroy things if he is not.  I would greatly appreciate any advice you can give me..........I would rather not get one of those collars that shock him to stop the barking............

Thanks everyone :)

We are condo dwellers and both Peri and Taquito bark to protect us when we are home. When I first brought Peri home and crate trained her, she was not used to the situation and barked for the first 30 minutes while we were gone (according to neighbors). We added a noise machine and put it on white noise and that helped TREMENDOUSLY. We also kept her crate partially covered just to keep her more secure. I think in your case, it is just going to take some time to adjust. If you see your neighbors out, just explain that it is going to take him some time and apologize in advance for the barking. Bear will get adjusted. I am sure you know this, but make sure you are taking him on a nice long walk before leaving him in his crate. Peri likes her crate and routine so much she will go right on in when we say "okay Peri go to your crate...time for us to go".

And echoing others, I am sorry about your situation, but I am so happy you have found a way to keep Bear with you through it all! =)
I would like to thank everyone for your kind words and advice on how we can quiet down Bear's barking. I did end up buying the collar version from guardian pet with the high pitched sound. Did try the low setting, but needed to move it up to the high for now since Bear was just ignoring the lower pitch. When he started to bark, it did go off and he tilted his head and stopped the barking. Right now, he is lying down on the floor moping because (we think) he has the collar on.......which makes me laugh because he is such like a child with the pouting :)

I am hoping this will work with him because I really like this rather than any other type......and I know some like the others.....please do not think I am saying to not use the other......everyone has a right to their own opinions :) that is why I appreciate everyone's suggestions.

Keep sending me ideas :)
Hi Holly - I too am sorry for your current situation (but completely admire your "bull by the horns" attitude!). I live in a row townhouse and share walls with my neighbors. The neighbors on my right are retired and one on my left works from home. When I first got Callie, they (nicely) reported that she barked for 8 straight hours every day. Like you, I didn't want to be "that" person, so I graduated Callie to being penned up in the kitchen. I don't know the layout of y'alls place, but if that's a possibility, it stopped Callie's barking immediately. One of the neighbors actually stopped to make sure that I still had her!
