Sorry if this has been covered, but the search is on the fritz.

I am considering a leather lead leash.  What should I be looking for?  Length, rolled or flat, anything else?  I have a large GD.

Thanks!

I have a great one - the Preston leather leash (the flat leather leash)! Highly recommend - I found on the DK Review page. Here is their website:

I have my eye on one from LL Bean, but I can't get it yet... Quinn still bites the leash when he gets wound up. :)

I would like to add that a leather leash is easier on your hands when you walk your dog. I have always used them, at
least 5 ft long, preferably 6ft, by at least one inch wide and flat, which is what the trainer I worked with years ago with my standard poodle recommended and actually required the 6 foot length for the class. My Golden Doodle is 60 lbs full grown and I wouldn't be without a leather leash.
Can I add to this question.... Also...Does anyone know where to find a rolled leather collar that does NOT have a buckle but rather a snap in latch? The rolled leather is supposed to be better with mats, and I DOleave her collar on all the time (my MIL takes her out when we're at work). Thanks! (Sorry to move in on your discussion BruceGirl!)
I would be interested in the answer to this - I use rolled leather collars exactly because of the matting. But, if it didn't have the size choice that a buckle provides, it would have to fit exactly and how often do you think that would happen?
Hmm... I didn't think of that nancy. You're right! I guess you couldn't adjust a rolled leather collar with a latch...Oh well - the hope was there, but I can see now how it would probably not be possible...
Unless there was a custom made one.... Then you would need one for before and after grooming.
So true!!!
I know my groomer specifically said the ROLLED leather collars are best. It does make sense... the nylon really can stick to the hair and catch it.
I have the best leather leash. Its called a working lead. It is 6ft but it has O rings in a couple of spots. You can use it long, wrap over your shoulder (hands free),use it as a tie down if needed. I bought it when Jordan was in training to be a service dog. It was about $25. It is my favorite leash. I have it brown.

Love this! I love the idea of putting it on your shoulder too, Is there a special name for it?
We have the Preston leather leash (that Allyson, Peri and Taquito posted) on our trainer's rec. We have had it for 3 years and love it! It gets a good work-out, too, since Nugget gets walked a lot. AND....it went through "puppy leash training" with us. (Trust me....that was a true test!) It is VERY strong. The difference betw this one and others is that the leather is braided which is longer lasting than stitching or bolts.

Good luck!!
