I don't give Tori any dog treats ever since her bout with the pork induced pancreatitis last April. But besides freezing her canned food into frozen meatballs for a night time treat before getting into her crate, we steam baby carrots and give her these every once in a while. I heard sweet potatoes are also great for dogs. Is there anything else dogs do well with? I know NO GRAPES, RAISINS, we don't (give) CORN either...anything else? She has such a sensitive tummy, that I'm really afraid to experiment. Thanks!
This is a good list, although some of the info is a little outdated. Everyone should make sure to check the Danger Group here on DK; there are similar lists to this and more information.
I have a dehydrator that I haven't used in ages! Glad you reminded me that I have it! To make dehydrated sweet potato treats, would you bake them first, and then cut them into slices and dehydrate them?
Here is a link on sweet potato treats. I buy Sam's Yams in the big boyz size. I pay around $11.00 for a 1 lb. bag. Pricey!!! Here is a link on sweet potato treats. I would read through all the posts on this link too. It seems that there is a question on if the skins of the sweet potato are toxic and be removed. Has anyone heard this?
I've heard that the skin of any potato can be toxic to anyone, if it's green. But this is just a blog and not based on any kind of scientific knowledge or evidence. I can try to look into the toxic aspect.
It was me, sweet potatoes treats! Sorry been out of town.
I peeled and sliced the potatoes about 1/2 inch thick placed them single layer on cooling racks on a cookie sheet put them in the oven at the lowest temp. It was late and I was tired so I went to bed and took them out the next morning. I don't think I'd cook them as long next time so they'd be chewy. I think a dehydrator would work great. The boys love them!
Allyson - I didn't realize sweet potatoes were good for th kidneys. Not that Tori has a problem - now- I hope, but I am always looking to keep them that way esp. after the pancreatitis - although my vet doesn't seem to feel I need to worry, but that's me - "Miss Worry Wart"!
