Lincoln killed a baby rabbit :-(
Tonight was just horrible. I don't want to get to descriptive because it was awful. First of all Lincoln ran after my cat outside, and rolled him, and thankfully Haku was okay and ran right back into the house, but then the next thing you know I hear this baby screaming sound, and I turn to see Lincoln has a baby rabbit in his mouth, and it's screaming and he won't drop it for me or leave it so I finally got a piece of chicken and he dropped it, but he was so badly injured. He didn't die right away either. I tried to save it, but it was too hurt. I called the vet, and they said they'd put it down for me, but the litlle guy didn't live. This was very traumatic for me and I cried so hard. The vets office told me that dogs do that. My dog Scott has chased a rabbit or two out of the yard, but never took a baby from it's nest. I didn't know I had a rabbits nest in my back yard. Anyway I found the nest, and there are still very new born babies in it, but I don't know if the mother rabbit will come back as Lincoln and now I was near it. I really hope she does. In the meantime thankfully I have the lead still in the ground so I am putting him on that in the meantime until they get a chance to leave. The vet told me that they don't know the difference between that and a squeak toy. I guess he has a strong prey drive which isn't good considering I have three cats. Lincoln is in the house with them all day, but he's in the kitchen, and nothing has happened so far. Do you think I need to worry? Sorry but I love all animals so this was very nerve wracking for me.

Perhaps Mom is able to sit on the nest and nurse without moving the sticks? Let's hope so. Maybe you could sprinkle some flour around the nest and see if that gets disturbed. Many years ago this worked with a skunk that got into the basement. We could see when it left and then close the door to keep it out.

Yeah I thought that too. They look fine from what I can see, and on the Wild Rabbit website they say that they would cry if hungry, and they aren't so I guess that's a good thing. I will celebrate the day the bunnies move out of the nest!!! My other dog Scott was sniffing it, but left it alone. He's older, and doesn't seem more than a little intrigued. I'm still watching him too though when I let him out. At least he's older and listens better than Lincoln. I'm going to plant some Marigolds around the trees to keep the bunnies away after this. Apparently they don't like marigolds.

Well I saw Mommy and Daddy rabbit this evening. She showed up at 7:00pm, and stayed until 7:26pm. I was really glad to see her there. It was pretty cute!!! I have the real McCoy this Easter except I don't know if they are Cottontales...LOL :D

Great! The common brown bunnies around here have white tails but I don't know about yours. At least they can take care of the babies and hopefully they mature rapidly.

Yes very rapidly!!!! LOL I have ducks laying eggs near me too!!! Do I have a vacant sign up or something????!!!

I remember seeing you post this awhile back and thinking, Oh God Sonny always chases the rabbits and birds in my yard but he just likes to chase." Well, this weekend my husband discovered a nest of baby bunnies as he was transplanting flowers. Bad enough he almost killed one as he thought it was a mouse, they are so tiny. My DH has been so good about checking on them and trying to fix the nest. He even built a fence around them with opening big enough for their mom to return. So tonight after checking on them, I go back out side and I see Sonny flipping something uo in the air and catching it, like he always does with his ball. As I got closer I ralized somehow he gotten to one of the bunnies and was playing catch with it. I was horrified and screamed no, drop it. Thankfully he did and the bunny is still breathing but not sure if it will make it. I feel horrible for the poor bunny and it's mama. Poor Sonny knew how how upset I was b/c he just sliked into the corner and just looked at me out of the corner of his eye. Why do these rabbits find the homes of pet owners???? Hope these bunnies make it.

Oh I feel so bad for you. It is such a helpless feeling...I have not let Lincoln off of a lead out in the backyard that does not reach the bunny hole. He is not very happy with that situation!! Lincoln would not drop the bunny. I had to bribe him with something else. He is still quite a defiant teenager...sigh...The bunnies are still in the nest and are growing and have fur. They are so cute. They still have the blazes on their heads so they are still too young to be on their own. I've seen the Mom a few times, but not lately, but I know she is visiting as I put twigs on top of her nest. One morning I couldn't put the dogs out back at all because she was there so I had to bring them out the front door. I can't wait until they leave the nest, and I hope they stay out of the yard!!! I will wait to make sure they are long gone before Lincoln gets his backyard privileges again. Actually it has helped him behave a little better with us while we are out there with him so it has been beneficial. I hope baby bunny makes it.

Unfortunatley that baby didn't make it. :( The other two are in the far corner of my yard so we just make sure we go out with Sonny at all times now. We havn't seen the mama but we did the x with sticks, they weren't disturbed but the dirt around them was so maybe she was there. Hopefully. We are getting a new fence starting on Wed. so the little hole in my fence that she is coming in and out of will be gone by Saturday. I may have to start nursing them. My hubby found a recipe online how to make a formula. This really is so upsetting and I know nature is nature but it now I feel responsible for them.

So sorry...that is always so troubeling to see your dog kill another living creature : ( I also know it is just their instinct, but you think of THEM as your baby and then they do that it makes you see them in a different way, at least for a while :(
