Do you leash walk them, or are they out free in the yard? If they are free, then I believe there are some good thoughts in the gardening group. If you leash walk (which we do), pouring water on the grass where they have urinated will help. We keep a water bottle full by the door, and grab it whenever we take them out. Pouring the water on the fresh "pee" spot will dilute the urine enough to prevent the spot in the lawn.
Males will do the same thing if they squat to pee.
The only thing you can do short of feeding your dog unnecessary chemicals is to hose down the area every time they urinate to dilute it.
Here's a recent discussion on this in the Garden Group: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/gardengroup/forum/topics/anything...
I'm with you. My husband hates the fact that there are yellow spots on his lawn. I don't know why. We have 2 little boys that do more damage than that. Instead of yellow spots, they make bare spots. Besides hosing em down, I mean the spot where the dogs did their business, not my boys, I've seen products advertised in pet magazines but don't know how reliable they are. I've even tried one that was a pill you gave with their food, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference.
come join us in the Garden Group. I'm thinking of trying a potty place ala a recent photo "discussion". Of course that means getting it built ant getting the dogs to use it. but it should make for easier "pop patrols"and keep the damage all in one place. http://www.doodlekisses.com/photo/helping-daddy-in-my-potty-pit
I'm so glad you asked this! Our snow finally melted here in Iowa and now the grass is coming back to life, except the horrible yellow spots all over our yard! It's even worse because we have to take Holly out in our front yard because our back yard has a flight of 15 steps down to the grass that she's scared to walk down. We'll have to try the water by the door to dilute it and see if that helps. We also need to get rid of the spots we already have though :).
The water should help...but you have to do it right away. I tried, but quickly got tired of having to go out there and water every potty spot when I had three dogs.
I am agonizing over the exact problem. Chewie is used to going in the front yard, because when I potty trained him last summer, I didn't want to be in the back in the dark (with the night critters...LOL). We have an e-fence around the entire house...front and backyards. What would be the easiest way to retrain him to only a particular area when he is used to going anywhere?
This wasn't a problem last summer/fall, but I guess the ph of his urine has changed as he matures...and no I won't use any additives to his food/water...probably don't work anyway.
