Allergies after a grooming

I just had my Wally trimmed yesterday from his winter coat - 3-4 inches long to about 3/4".  He was heavily matted and the groomer used the clippers to get up underneath the mats.  He had a tough time on his stomach and noticed he had lots of "red" hot spots on his stomach.  They placed some topical solution and tried to sell it to me which I refused.  I like to use a "Neem" spray which I did upon coming home.\

 

Later, my 9 yr old took it upon himself to spray Wally's back with his hair detangler and afterwards Wally had a bad allergic reaction.  He kept scratching his eyes which became swollen.  I tried giving him Benadryl and he ended up throwing up so I know he didn't consume it.  He had kind of a restless night but seems quiet and comfortable now. 

 

I'm hesitant to take him to the vet because they usually prescribe heavy duty drugs.

 

Does anyone else have similar experiences after grooming?

I have heard of a few people whose dogs had red rashy spots or irritated areas from razor burns after a grooming. I had a poodle who was very sensitive to clippers and they were never used on her; hand-scissoring only.
I don't know what Neem spray is, but the reaction from the hair detangler was most likely not an allergic reaction; the spray got into Wally's eyes and nose, in addition to being on his back. The best thing to do in a case like that is to wash around his eyes and nose with plain water and of course, make sure your child understands that he mustn't use any kind of products on Wally. The reaction following the hair-detangler most likely has nothing at all to do with the red spots from the grooming, and neither one is likely to be related to allergies.
I hope Wally is feeling better.

When Jasper was matted, we used a good natural conditioner straight onto the matted area and slowly bit by bit with your fingers try to get the knots apart. Be patient and it wont hurt him. You can also buy a special dematting comb. They are hooked at the end and easy detangle even the worst mats. Once the mats are out, use a leave in special dog conditioner with oatmeal and Aloe Vera and brush him at least once a week properly and he should be matt free forever! Neem shampoo and conditioner might work too???
Bet your 9 yr old is in the bad books. Poor Wally!

My standard poodle had clipper "burn" after grooming once.Among the reasons, I now do all the grooming myself. the Parker solution for all sorts of things like this is a little hydrocortisone cream, rubbed gently but well int the skin. good for insect bites on people and dogs, too.

Have we ever! The only thing I will take Hunter to the groomer for now is her nails, ears, face, and private parts. No bathing, shaving, heavy perfume spays, shampoo's nothing. She had a terrible reaction when I had her groomed about a month ago, she got a really bad weepy rash on the insides of both her back legs that came out within 24 hours or being there. This is the second time this has happened and I put 2 and 2 together finally and realized it was something at the groomers. I can't decide if its the clippers, sprays or shampoo's that they use. She was soooo heavily scented in something when I picked her up that my husband said she smelled like a French Floozey! I gave her a bath myself the next day because of that but not in time that she didn't get the rash really bad. I took her to the vet and she felt that it was some product the groomer used more so than a clipper/razor burn type rash. She gave her an antibiotic and antihistimines and it cleared up in about 3 or 4 days. I alternate what I bath her in - I will use Selsun Blue (vet recommended this) and the next time a shampoo called Hydropearls to keep her moisturized. I also found that when I use a blow dryer at all on her she gets really itchy so I don't use one at all - she just air drys along with a Sham Wow.

How are his eyes now?

Jack's specialist says that a hot dryer definitely aggravates itchy skin; she advises a cool dryer or just air drying.

I was using the cool setting on the hair dryer and she was still itchy afterwards! Not worth it, the sham wow and the air drying are fine - my husband doesn't appreciate a wet Hunter on his Lazy Boy but I just tell him sacrifices have to be made! lol She doesn't end up frizzy at least :-)

Not to put groomers out of business but you could so easily add those 'little bits" to your own grooming.
