After reading a few blogs on the topic, I thought it appropriate to get some recommendations on car harnesses. What are people using? Can you just buy a car tether and attach it to the easy walk harness if you are already using that or do you need a special harness? We had a car harness for Whopper when she was a puppy but she continually wiggled out of it and ended up on the floor and we never purchased another. It's definitely time! Looking forward to all of the recommendations.
We have the CHAMPION Canine Seat Belt System http://www.champk-9.com/CCSS.htm. I'd definitely recommend it. It is very well made and has a padded chest strap. In fact my engineer brother-in-law was quite impressed with the quality.
Thanks for all of the recommendations. After researching pros and cons, we have decided to invest in the Champion System. We even ordered a second restraint belt for our second car. Now we just have to wait and hope it gets here quickly!
Thanks for this post! I really need to look into this. Callie doesn't roam around in the car, but she is just loose in the back seat. This will the king of dumb questions, but can they be restrained and still somehow stick their nose out the window? That is one of Callie's cheif joys in life (it is of course more important for her to be safe, but if we could have the best of both worlds...)
This is what I am hoping for when my Champion harness set up arrives. It says they can lay down and I really hope they can make it to the window too. Gracie LOVES to have her nose out the window or stand on the console and put her head out the sunroof. I doubt it will allow the sunroof but I sure hope it allows the side window. It will probably be a week before it arrives and we are out of town Thursday-Sunday so I will let you know when we get back and try it out.
morgan uses a harness (i have him attached to a leash that i've rigged between the "carseat" things behind the backseat...lol) he can lay down, stick his nose out both side windows & put his chin on my shoulder when he feels like it...:)
Nancie, I am looking into the Champion harness for Wrigley, and I was wondering how it's working for Gracie Doodle. Let me know what you think about it. Thanks!
The harness for Gracie Doodle has worked out just fine. We put it to it's first long distance test on an 8 hr. drive to visit out daughter and her family. Gracie was able to lay down, stick her nose out the window, etc. When we would take a break I just attached the leash to the harness loop or you can go the collar route. The only draw back is that you have to figure out how to put it on at first. I lay it on the ground and then have Gracie step into it. Sometimes I get it on backwards. You can always make a little mark with a Sharpie as to which buckle is the front one. Otherwise, very happy with it!
We use this harness for Whopper also. Our only issue is that it is somewhat bulky. It definitely does the job however and allows her freedom to move around and get comfortable. The bulkiness isn't a factor in the car. It's when you're going a short distance to do something fun and you don't want to switch back and forth but also don't want her to have to wear the heavier harness.
