There are lots of labradoodles and goldendoodles listed on petfinder. These are with a private rescue and I'm sure will be adopted soon.

Hey Karen, What if we find LDs or GDs that are listed with county animal control? Is there a place where we can post? I think you did a discussion on this in the past, but I can't seem to find it.

Well, as you know, we crosspost all Petfinder listings of GDs and LDs on the DRC website. Dogs in kill shelters are also posted in a separate Urgent section. I don't think there is a place here on DK to post doodles in need of homes, except as a discussion or blog like this.

Yes, if you want to make a petfinder dog known ... or any dog in need known, the discussion forum is the place to do it as it will be most visible to others.

I was wondering the same thing! Basically if someone would find them at a kill shelter before they are on petfinder.

If anyone found a doodle in a kill shelter before they were listed on Petfinder, it would be pretty tough to do anything, since that would mean the dogs were still on hold to be reclaimed; often, such a dog's status is not even listed in the AC's records. And it's doubtful a person visiting the shelter would even see such a dog, since they wouldn't be in a public adoption area.
However, best thing to do in such a case is to contact a private rescue group in your area. You can be sure there are some. People tend to forget or not even be aware that there are many private local rescue groups who save adoptable dogs in kill shelters, and can often act very quickly since they are local.
In fact, everyone who claims to love dogs should make it their business to learn about private rescue groups in their own area, keep their contact info handy, and support them in their local activities. Petfinder has a section for looking for rescue groups and shelters in your area; you may be surprised at how many there are in your own location.
And of course, you can always contact the DRC or IDOG if you know of a doodle in danger.

You are definitely right in that contacting a private rescue group or the DRC is a great way to go. I will add however that a doodle in a shelter not listed on petfinder is not necessarily still on hold. Unfortunately, many shelters don't list pets on petfinder and even those who do sometimes have a delay. I recently found a doodle not on petfinder and not even posted on the shelter site due to someone mentioning on craigslist that they had seen a doodle there. I just don't want people to assume that all doodles in kill shelters not listed on petfinder are definitely on hold.

You're right that many shelters don't list on Petfinder, and there is often a delay. But in the case you're mentioning, the only way to know about it would be on Craig's list. How would anyone know there was a doodle in a kill shelter if they're not listed? That's what I meant.
I never, ever look at Craig's list for any reason, and it wouldn't have occurred to me that that's what was meant by "find them at a kill shelter", lol. In actuality, the person who did see the dog in the kill shelter did NOT do the right thing...instead of contacting an agency that could help the dog, they posted an ad on CL.
It's kind of unbelievable to me that someone would see a dog in danger at a kill shelter and think to themself, "I better go post this on Craig's List". Posting anywhere is not the best way to help the dog. Action in the form of contacting a rescue who can help the dog is what should be done.
So my point is not whether or not a dog is on hold, my point is that if someone becomes aware of a dog in danger in a kill shelter, they need to notify someone who can help.

I just re-read all of this and now realize that in the comment above yours, Denise and Hunter referred to kill shelters specifically. I was more thinking about the start of this discussion regarding finding dogs in general at any shelter (kill or no/kill). You are absolutely right that anyone who finds a doodle in a kill shelter should not post to craigslist and should contact a rescue. The one I found through craigslist was in fact not at a kill shelter but had been there for a few weeks already but was not posted anywhere for people to know he was there. I think you and I agree on all fronts. I just wanted to make sure that people know that at any shelter, not being on petfinder does not equal being on hold still. Even at kill shelters people can see a dog that's not on hold and not on petfinder and in this case they should contact a rescue immediately! Sorry if I created any confusion as we are all just trying to help as many dogs as possible.

My rescue doodle was not on Petfinder. He was not listed at his kill shelter, Oddly the humane society thought he was, but they are in the midst of a move so..... I posted him here and no one even called the humane society to check on him. He was in a kill shelter and then the humane society. My point is that apparently he was not advertised well by the shelters, but he was posted on dk. If someone is looking for a doodle, my advice is to look everywhere and often. Don't assume that dog is or will be taken immediately by someone else. Have applications pre-filled out if you can. Don't be shy, be aggressive about checking on the dog you are interested in. If everyone holds back because they think they don't have a chance, the dogs will be in their 'jails' longer waiting for you.
