So this has been one heck of a week. Floods in Nashville - friends having houses destroyed, and now Peri has kennel cough (we think - called emergency vet and that is what they think - taking her in tomorrow).
We took her to doggy daycare Friday and they had lots of dogs from the other daycare that was flooded. So new dogs, possibly lack of vet records, you get the picture. Peri was vaccinated for bortitella, but apparently, has come down with the cough. Throwing up all day after these crazy coughs that sound TERRIBLE. We are so worried, but emergency vet said tomorrow would be fine to take her to our regular doctor.
My question: she is hungry. Going around wanting to drink TONS of water and will eat anything she can find. But she coughs like crazy and then throws up more when we give her anything at all.
Do I give her water when she wants it? Even though she will throw it up after coughing?
Do I give her dinner tonight???
I tried to do a search but we are a little panicked and are hoping you can help.
I think I am just going to answer my own question and say no to the food. She got into some of Tackys and immediately coughed and threw up chunks. The cough is terrible. We will just let her have water but no food tonight.
Taquito was just vaccinated - only 6 weeks ago. So I hope he is okay. But I am sure my vet will prescribe something for him without him coming in if he comes down with it.
We just gave her some ice chips and calmed her down - she is in my lap and has not thrown up in 20 minutes - that is the longest all day. She keeps coughing, but I am calming her down and she is okay.
Thank you so much for the advice!!! I will keep you posted.
Oh Allyson! I am so sorry that Peri is sooo sick!!! Hope tomorrow brings you both some relief! I am sure you will probably not get much sleep tonight ~ I am truly sorry!!!! Sending good thoughts your way {{{HUGS}}} for support!
You could give her some chicken broth or chicken soup maybe? I don't think you want to restrict her liquid intake - you don't want her to become dehydrated. Hopefully, she has a mild case. One of my dogs had kennel cough a few years ago and she needed antibiotcs treatments. She did drink throughout the course of the illness, which lasted about 5 days (as far as I remember). Best wishes.
You should never give a dog chicken broth or soup unless you made it yourself by boiling the chicken parts. All of the canned varieties have way too much sodium and contain onion! Onion is poisonous to dogs!
I just saw this post, and we're going through this now with both Murphy and Guinness today. I'm sure they have kennel cough...same symptoms. Murph threw up everything he ate all day Saturday....even the chicken and rice. Yesterday he was able to keep oatmeal down. He is also drinking like crazy, which is good because I can keep him hydrated. The problem is he has to constantly pee, and he's having accidents (poor guy just can't help it). We're off the the vet this morning. Good luck...I'll post what I find out after my visit.
Just talked with my Vet, and she said that Kennel Cough is running rampant in our area, and she's sure that's what Guinness and Murphy have. She's prescribing a med for them...have to go pick it up now. Poor guys. Hope Peri is okay.
Same exact thing with us - just got back from the vet. Of course she barely coughed there!!!
They said she had a mild case - probably because she was vaccinated. Vet said same think yours did, Jane, about the different strains and how it is not always effective for every kind.
We have antibiotics and cough suppressent now. She will be okay - poor girl. When will Taquito get it??? He had the nasal spray 2 months ago - keep your fingers crossed! But if he gets it, I don't have to take him in -they will let me pick up meds.
I hope Guinness and Murphy get well soon!!!!
Oh and Peri ate about 1/2 of her breakfast and is drinking lots of water. No throwing up today. YAY!
