I know this isn't realllyyy related to grooming but is getting a rolled leather collar better than a flat nylon? I hear when they're rolled they're less likely to tangle, and matts don't form under them like they would with a flat collar. Is this true?

I use a rolled collar on Austin and I see a difference between both collars. Rolled is better. Grooming doodles I see that flat collars can leave mats underneath
My dogs have flat collars and yes I find the fur tends to go flat and mat underneath I have not seen a rolled collar what are they like and are they leather
Ya if you search Rolled Leather collars you can see them. I hear a lot about them, and they're not expensive, so I figure I should try it out
I switched to a rolled leather collar because Ned was matting around his nylon one. The neck matting is definitely less with the rolled collar. Down side: the rolled collar is leather and doesn't dry quickly and the color may stain fur when it gets wet or you put Frontline on and put the collar back on too soon. My golden lab mix USED to have a green one until he had a green neck! We chose a simple brown one for Ned because the really light tan one wasn't available. They get darker as they absorb dirt etc. and I don't think you can wash them like nylon.
We use a rolled leather collar on Ned. It does cause less neck matting. The color can stain the fur when it gets wet so you may want to choose a lighter bland color. They darken over time. They are a little harder to fasten because they buckle and the size needs to be a little more exact.
Yes, I am wondering about the rolled collar vs flat nylon. Buddy's groomer (and Ned's!) recommended switching to a rolled leather collar. I just wish someone made a rolled leather collar with a flat clip like the nylon collars, just for safety (quick release) if nothing else. It's good to hear that the leather collar actually does reduce matting--Buddy mats up terribly on the back of his neck. Any brands to recommend?
Joy, I buy the rolled leather collars from PetCo or PetSmart. I would love to order a nicer one but because they buckle, I want to check the fit. I also buy the smallest one I can that fits because it is thinner than the next size up. I buy the same collar for Clancy but I don't think I have to - he doesn't mat up.
Thanks, Nancy, that is very helpful. The local small pet store in Redlands, Paws, has rolled leather collars by Premier. After reading your message (and I brought home a collar that was too big yesterday), I think I need to take Buddy in there tomorrow and size him. The only thing is that some of the Premier collars seem rough on the inside but maybe they would soften up. I will check Petco tomorrow, too. Someone told me to soften the collar with a leather conditioner first.

Oh, I found this online: http://www.dogcollarsboutique.com/Alpine-Rope-Collar-8-colors-avail...
Any thoughts?
Those look like flat collars at first glance. I will look more closely when I get home. Cherrie also recommends undyed rolled leather - we have gotten them in the past, but have had to get dyed ones most recently. She also recommends that you don't clean the little bits of fur that catches in them. These are the ONLY ones Ned can wear daily. Would the leather conditioner have a residue that got on the fur????? Scared to try.
We have a pretty martingale one for him that I wanted to use for photos - nope - a couple of hours and he has lots of neck mats. We just 'won' a plastic collar that could be used in water. I am going to try it for once-in-a-while. With Clancy it doesn't matter at all apparently.
I chatted online with someone at the site and he said the Alpine collar should work the way the rolled leather ones work, that the coat should not mat up with it. Plus they have a 60-day return policy. The collar is only 9.95 but shipping is another 8.95 so it comes to about $20. But we go to the ocean all summer and I'm thinking it might be a good option for summer. Let me know what you think of it.
I just don't think the rope would work as well. I think the hairs will catch and knot, but if it has a guarantee, you could try it. Just keep checking daily. It won't take long if it is going to cause mats and tangles. Ned won a plastic collar at the Las Vegas romp last Saturday and I haven't had a chance to try it on him, but if it doesn't cause too much matting, I am going to use it when I think he will get wet. I was not an expensive collar and I think it is from PetSmart or PetCo. You might give that a try also. Where do you go to the Ocean? We spend lots of time in Oceanside and in Pismo.
