My friend just had a baby and I'd like to get her a small gift (under $100).  What do new moms like?  Just a background on my friend:  She's 31 and just had her 2nd baby girl.  She was told 10 years ago that she wouldn't be able to get pregnant after her first child.  So her new baby, Riley Grace, is practically a miracle baby.

I was thinking about either one of these.  Are these good gifts?  Any suggestions would be great.

Of the two gifts, I prefer the snow globe. I see you are looking for a keepsake rather than a practical gift, and the snowglobe would hold up better through the years than the book, I think.
Is she registered anywhere? That would tell you what she wanted that wasn't purchased, and would also tell you her nursery theme, etc.
Have you thought about maybe a piece of jewelry, a little sterling silver locket with her initials on it, maybe? Small silver children's jewelry should be within your price range. There's a chain of stores called "Things Remembered" that specializes in personalized gifts; their prices are not too great, though. You could probably get more for your money on-line.
I love both of these.... my "new" gift I now give to new moms is a gift certificate for baby portraits.... It's a gift they can treasure forever. I usually give it in a picture frame that is 'just their style' My friends and family always love this as pictures can become expensive. Either to Babies R Us or even a local photographer... Just another thought!
That's a good idea. Picture frames can be personalized, too.
Most Moms I know like gift certificates :)
Both gifts are very special. I am a sucker for books because reading is my favorite thing to do.
I prefer practical gifts so I would rather have the book.  But I can't think of any specific suggestions.  So hard to know what to get without knowing what she already got.  My fav items have been:
-- Swing
-- Sleep positioner
-- Kiddopotamus Swaddle Me thingies
-- Hooter Hider (it's actually called that).

They aren't that exciting but they have been most useful.  Also

-- Aiden and Anais muslin cloth swaddle blankets
-- Breast (Brest?) Friend nursing pillow
My vote is for the book (very lovely) or something for mom (a food basket from igourmet or a gift certificate to a salon with 2 hrs of babysitting by you).

My kids have broken two snow globes right in front of me while being given a "special chance to hold it" and being over four--I persist in buying one each Christmas, but in my experience they are sooooooo tantalizing for the kid but so hands off. They do not break "nicely" either--think rice-sized icicles of glass. I have almost no rugs in my house though--maybe hers is carpeted?

my two cents
This is my favorite gift to give for new babies & engagement gifts
For a baby her na;me, DOB, weight, parents names. I have purchased this gift numerous times and never had a problem with them. They make tons of different baby gifts to choose from.
I also love the idea of adding a carton of diapers, bringing them dinner in 3 weeks from now when everyone else has gone back to their lives and reality has set in WOL!

Adrianne--what is "WOL"???
I absolutely LOVE the book!
I vote for the book :) . ANY book! I'm such an advocate for early reading that any thing that encourages that is wonderful! It will also last a life time and be able to be passed down from generation to generation if she wishes. I have books that were my Great -Grandmother's!!!!!!!!!

Also, in my experience, I've never had a snow globe that has held its water. Ali received a beautiful one from my parents years and years ago that I treasured but in time the water evaporated :(.

Much love to Riley Grace Jane. Our Kyle is a similar "miracle baby" and I share your joy :)
