So, I am 45 years old and have always been considered athletic.  But it' always been on my own terms and just for fun.  Now that I am older, I felt that I let a talent slide by.  So, I have been considering marathon racing.  Afterall, Lucky and I run practically 4-5x per week for about an hour at a stretch.  What that translates into miles, I can only guess.  So, what, the heck, I thought, lets see what I can do with the big dogs.  Long story short, I participated in my first 5k on Sunday!  I did not have my Lucky companion by my side, but I could tell the pace was faster than what I was use to.  I finished in 27.42 minutes and came in 2nd in my age group for women.  That was Sunday, and it is now Tuesday, and I am still sore and can not stop eating!  I do not feel like taking Lucky out for our jogs because of this.  How long will this last and was it worth it?  He, my Lucky dog, I think knew that I went running without him because he has been getting into mischief ever since! :)

Way to go! I would take some Motrin or something and do a ton of stretching. Do you like yoga? I've found that doing a little yoga after running really helps stretch everything out. I did a 5k last weekend, but my time wasn't as good as yours. I'm gearing up for a 10-mile run in Chicago on 5/29, but the furthest I've run so far is 8.5. Whenever I'm done with a run, I try to make sure that I walk around for awhile after the run. And then I try to do something around the house or anything else that just keeps me moving. When you stop and sit, that's when everything tightens up. So maybe take Lucky for just a long walk, and see if that helps loosen things up a bit. The pain makes you want to stop moving, but I think moving really helps the recovery.
thanks for your reply! I am very new to this(running competively) so your input and support is much appreciated!
Lucky is a medium doodle-58- 65 pounds depending on his hair cut. That ice bath sounds painful, but I've never been in colligiate sportts so I'm sure you know what you're talking about. I think I'll try the legs against the wall first!
You can actually get to where you love an ice bath. I still give my left ankle one after particularly grueling tennis matches. Sorta like how alka seltzer is so gross but you come to love it because it really helps.
Way to go! I used to run a lot and stopped about 2 years ago - I still miss it (and I WAY miss the jeans that I have chubbed out of!)! I agree with Leslie on the yoga. If you intersperse your runs with yoga or pilates you will stretch yourself back out. The walking will help too. I also tended to do better in race recovery in I went for a post run gentle swim. The combo of cool to cold water and motion really helped! Keep up the great work - you're a speed demon!
This is a little off-topic, but have any of you guys tried barefoot running, or barefoot style in minimalist shoes? Since November, I've been running in the Vibram Five Fingers, and I love them.
I haven't, but have heard good things. The physical therapist recommended them to me if I start running again (I tend to build up too much muscle in my calf and I split the fascia, and she thought this might help me with that issue)
Running barefoot works your calves a lot, so it must build the muscle in a different way than a more traditional running style. Every once in awhile, I discover a new little piece of calf muscle that I didn't even know I had. Maybe the barefoot style works your calves in a way that doesn't stress the fascia so much?
I don't know...mostly I don't ever want to hurt like that again, so I'm sticking with tennis. Even with special shoes, I'll never be able to do more than 4 miles at a time, and I have always hated the first 3 miles of every run so it's hard to get jazzed for it! Now I go for walks with Callie and my friend and her baby come too...stroller speed seems to work for my calf!
Way to go! This is very inspiring. The last time I ran was to the bathroom or to answer the phone. Sigh.
that is very funny, a sense of humor goes a long way in this journey of life!
Congratulations! I am envious.
