Well Mr. Oliver started going after his tail yesterday, and scratching all over his body...I was kind of freaking out, as we just went thru the nightmare with his foot several mos. ago, So this am, I had him at the vet at 8:30 am, to check it out. Seems he had chewed himself raw under his tail, all red and angry looking.Turns out it is a hot spot on both sides of the tail underneath near the base of the tail. Since we are going away one week from today, and my boys are staying with my cousin and her dog, I was freaking out. He gave him a shot, a steroid to stop the itching, and a cream to put on the area...Have u ever tried to hold a 70 lb dog still to apply cream in a delicate area???...This is not easy to say the least. They told me he would be drinking a lot and peeing alot. Well he really isn't drinking more then normal. and he is very mopey. He is supposed to be going to the groomer tomorrow for a soothing oatmeal bath and just a trim. His hair is not long, but from his scratching he has made mats in different places. He is sleeping alot today and I am hoping it is just from the shot. Why do these things happen at the worst times? Not that there is ever a good time for this stuff, but he was doing so good. I have a feeling I might have caused this, I used something on my carpeting to remove the doggy smell, and I bet that started this.Ya know the stuff you spronkle on the casrpet and vacuum up, I did it on Fri, and this started on Sun, Sry this is so long, just needed to vent, and oh O don't know I am just so frustrated, and oh to add insult to injury, he is wearing that awful collar again, ugh, what a bad Mommy I am,,,if I did this to him....

Cheryl, I really doubt it was from the carpet deodorizer. I know people think these things are from chemicals in cleaning products, but that's rarely the case. You are NOT a bad mommy.
Steroids can cause excessive thirst and urination. But they work really fast, so you should be able to do without the collar in a day or so. Make sure the groomer doesn't use a hot dryer on him; have her use a cool setting or better yet, air dry if possible.
Oliver should be much better in a week. Hope he's much better very quickly! Hugs to you both.
Thanks Karen, I appreciate your kind words. The vet told me about some dog foods that I wanted to run by you, right now Oliver is on Taste of the Wild, wetlands formula with duck. He loves it, but I wonder if that could be the problem? He told me about z/d ultra? never heard of that one, IVD (Royal Canine with Duckm sweet potato and venison? and Nutro Natural Choice with Venison and brown rice formula? I have tried to follow the food group, but I get so confused, I looked for food that was grain free, and made in the U.S. and I thought I did a good thing, but maybe it is the food? He was on Blue Wildermess, Salmon formula, and that was good, but he stopped eating that one, for some reason just refused to eat it...So I switched to Taste of the Wild...Have u heard of these that the vet recommended? I am just so comfused with this food thing...For years I used Canadae, and still do for my other dog. Any help u can give me Karen woild be appreciated...thanks for the kind words, much appreciated.
Nutro is loaded with cancer causing preservatives and synthetic vitamins that can damage your dog's liver & kidneys. The other two are Rx foods that you have to buy from your vet which use the cheapest, unhealthiest ingredients possible and cost a fortune for the privilege. Terrible choices, all three of them. Plus, if Oliver is already on a duck based formula that contains no corn or wheat, what sense would it make to switch to another duck based formula? The z/d (which is made by Hill's Science Diet - blech) uses duck because most food allergies involve chicken or beef as protein sources.
Cheryl, I really doubt very much that food is the problem here, but if you're thinking this is a food allergy, you are going to have to do food trials with limited ingredient foods and a different protein source, and it takes about 12 weeks to see results, if food was even the cause. Especially now, when Oliver is on meds and not feeling well to begin with, and you are planning to leave town in a week, I would not put him through any more changes by starting a new food. Let the meds do their thing, wait until you get back from your trip, and then we can talk about another food.
thank you Karen, I totally agree with what u said. I would never start him on something new when I am going away, and even if I wasn't if he was not feeling well and on meds, I will not do it. And to be perfectly honest with you, I do not think it is a food allergy either...I will wait until we get back and all is well for for awhile and then I will talk to you about maybe changing food. thank you for your honesty and patience with me...We are going up North to New Jersey for 2 weeks to see family and friends. My mother in law is going to be 100 yrs old, so my husband wants to spend some time with her, and we are going to see my family too...Thank goodness the boys will be staying with my cousin who is head of poodle rescue here. She loves them and her dog and my two are best of friends...I just worry about leaving him if he is not 100 per cent. So I am hoping all will be well by next week..Again, ty Karen so much...
Sounds like you couldn't be leaving him in better hands. A 100th birthday is something to celebrate, I certainly hope your MIL passed those genes on to your DH! Enjoy the trip & don't worry, Oliver will be just fine!
thanks Karen, I sure hope so. On both counts, lol...She is sharp as a tack, and if her hearing and eyesight weren't failing, she would still be driving, lol...she is still full of piss and vinegar, and she makes my sister in law nuts, lol, she lives by herself, still cooks for herself, and still watches the same soap operas she has watched for years...She remembers everything, and tells you all the time that she remembers everything, lol. She refuses to live with anyone, lol
You have my sympathy!!!
I clean the floors with vinegar and water now, just on the off chance...
The last time Porter went to town on his tail, a couple weeks ago actually, I had no idea if it was a bully stick, pollen, psychosis, the moon aligned with Venus. I came home from the store and as I knelt to great him, I saw all this brownish stuff on my stainless steel fridge...and the walls. Then I saw that some of it was red, and that his tail was the source. He was painting my kitchen with his blood, using his tail as a freakin' brush!!!
We seem to have recovered with a couple days of antihistamines. My husband was joking that we need a reverse cone for him...to go around his butt.
Well we are also giving him Benedryl so that will make him tired, but your story has mine beat, I probably would have freaked if I came home and saw all that blood. My husband was cleaning the blood off his tail this am. so I wouldn't see it and freak out. I see that the area is not as angry tonight, still red, but definately not as red, lets hope tomorrow is even better..Thanks for the response Melissa...
Best wishes for a quick recovery. Porter is a nibbler more than a licker. This was his first blood, and he's never had a hotspot per se, just scratches until he has shorter patches and rips with his mouth the tail hair out. When he has a flare-up he itches all day, under normal circumstances, his itching time is at night if he gets roused from a deep sleep and in the morning. So I am lucky that I am around to distract him.
Gunner has gotten 2 hot spots. It could be numerous things. The medicine does work, but does make him tired. I feel your pain.
thanks Holly, lets hope tomorrow is a better day, it has to be right???, lol...I am hoping that the med will help him relax thru the night...He just looks at me with these sad eys, it breaks my heart...
Yeah, I agree with Karen, I really dont think it is the carpet deodorizer. Steroid is effective, so don't worry, he will be feeling a lot better soon. Get well soon Mr. Oliver :)
