Our Labradoodle Madison just had a litter and she has 10 beautiful puppies 6 male and 4 female yet people that are interested in puppies seem to want female puppies over males and its not for breeding. We don't see a difference. Anyone give us help!
Echoing others....Males are great!!!!! I have never had a female dog until my Peri. I LOVE males....grew up with males....wanted a male doodle...but I would have had to wait for a while for to get a male from the parents I liked. Breeder emailed me and said that the two people on the waitlist before me wanted only a male, and then asked if I wanted a female. That is how I got Lady Peri. I didn't care at that point - new I wanted a puppy from those particular parents, so I got Peri.
My point is, I love, love, love male dogs. Love my Peri, but cannot imagine how our society has the female puppies in higher demand. I grew up with 7 different male dogs throughout my life and all of them were wonderful.
I just think male dogs get a bad rap. The misconception is that they are higher energy, more destructive, and will have a tendency to be more dominant. Add that in with the misconceptions about marking and humping- well, like I said, its a bad rap! We have one of each, male and female GDs. While I will say our male had a little more energy as a puppy, he's also WAY more obedient! And the only humper around here is our female!!
We have been boarding our labradoodle puppies and have had a chance to see how they act when they come back and I can say that I don't see any difference at all. I think its just the way people believe that the male humps everything and the poor female. Hope that doesn't sound sexist. Ready for the next ROMP
Great idea.
Thanks for everyones input. Since we always have less females than males in every litter and I don't understand why convincing people that are so strong on their convictions is not easy.
I am one of those that if you had told me I could have a male dog today, or I had to wait 2 years to get a female, I would have waited! But, I also have a preference for little girl babies over little boys (sorry all you boy mommies). I just like little girlie stuff ..... I like pink ...... I like shopping for little girl things. Even when we were going to start fostering, I said "Females only" .... but then got an opportunity for a male foster and knew we had to do it! Now we have done our 2nd male foster. I can say in the case of these 2, they were much more affectionate than my girls (some of that could have to do with the fact that my girls are liter mates). The fosters were affectionate 24/7. My girls are affectionate on their own terms. I didn't have trouble with the males humping, or marking (but I was worried I would). However, my Sophie humps Lucy all the time! I think that it just really in many cases boils down to preference .... just like some people like pink and some like green! Sometimes you can convince a pink to link green also, but not always.
My choices have been so similar! I have always had female dogs. It wasn't a "girlie" thing per se, or aggression, or marking, or humping...it was feeling mildly grossed-out by the "lipstick" (a friend's male dog in college had a "crush" on me and I saw a little bit TOO much of his personal anatomy as a result). Now I have fostered two male dogs and no longer have this prejudice (although I do prefer when they keep their lipsticks to themselves). If I ever get a second dog, I would not factor in male v female, would look entirely at personality and if Callie liked them.
