Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I have a lady that bought one of my Labradoodle puppy about a month ago.  When I sent her an e-mail to check in on how things are going.  She
told me that she has been given him a bath about twice a week.  After 2 days he is already smelly again. He is on the same food that he was when he left.   I told her to take him to vet and have then done
a good exam.   I have told her to try a change
his food to see if that helps any.   But
I’m not sure what ails to tell her.
I wanted to see if anyone had anything
ales that I can tell her to try.  Or what
also she might be able to do.

   Thanks for the help.

Hi Georgette,

Has the woman with the puppy checked its ears? When I first got my puppy I gave her a few baths, but was not careful about the cleaning out the ears. (She was my first pup....I had no idea about the ears....I was just being careful around the eyes!). Anyway, the smell was coming from the ears...so no matter how many baths she got...the smell didn't go away. I took her to the vet and turns out she had an ear infection, and after antibiotics and some cleansing solution, everything was fine. Hopefully she takes your advice and goes to the vet and it's nothing serious!
He did have a ear infection. But the vet has told her that they are better. But I will tell her to checks them to see if that is were the odor is coming form.
My puppy (14 weeks) is just coming off antibiotics for ear infections. I also had no idea about cleaning his ears. The vet also said that he seems to have a lot of hair in his ears (a poodle trait) so he needs to have that pulled when he is groomed.
I tell every one that gets a puppy that they need to pucky the hair in there ears. if they don't know what I'm talking about I show then how to do it. She is going to be doing the grooming her self. So I mead sure that she know how to do it.
Is it just a doggy odor? I don't know anything about the puppy, but I have noticed that some flat coated labradoodles do have a distinct doggy odor. I have two, a wool coat and a non-shedding wavy fleece, the only time they get a doggy odor is when they wrestle with other dogs
He dose have a wavy fleece coat. She is telling me that is just doggy odor. But when he was here he did not small. and he was here in tell he was 5 moths. When he first want home she told me that he did not small. It had just stared about 4 weeks ago. and they have had him for about 9 -10 weeks now. That is why I'm not sure what to tell them.
EARS, EARS, EARS! When we got Ned he smelled, we bathed him, he smelled, we bathed him, he smelled. It took us a few days to realize the stink was ears. We should have known better but..... If she is a new dog owner, perhaps she got the pups ears wet which caused an ear infection and she doesn't know to smell the ears.
Georgette...you might want to have the vet check the pups anal glands. There might be an infection or impaction, or possibly they need expression. A consistant odor even after bathing could be due to anal issues...connected to diet or lots of other things. A vet can check this quickly in the office. Express them as necessarily, sometimes the techs in the office will do the checking rather than the Veterinarian and express if they are full. Some dogs even have surgery to remove anal glands in very serious cases. I personally don't know any really young pups with those issues, but that doeesn't mean it doesn't happen. Actually it is more common that we think in the canine world. Some people who own dogs learn to express the anal glands as needed (not my idea of fun), and some groomers express anal glands if found to be full during a grooming.
Thanks I will tell her. She is bring the puppy back to the vet on thuesday to have his ear looked at, and I will let her know about the anal glands. And have the vet check them.
