I couldn't find another discussion that talked exclusively about Addiction dog food so I would like to start this thread. Is anyone feeding any of their products to their doodles and if so, specifically, which ones, the dehydrated raw, the kibble or the canned food? Does anyone have any information regarding ingredients that they would like to share? I am always looking for different food to rotate or to be ready to use in case there are issues with what I am presently feeding. I would appreciate any and all input! Thanks so much!
We did have a question about Addiction and Primal; I'd have to go back and look at the links to know why, but my gut feeling at the time was that I liked Primal's website better in terms of being straight-forward without as much hype. I know that isn't very helpful, but here's the link: http://www.doodlekisses.com/group/thefoodgroup/forum/topics/raw-foo...
I just looked at their dry foods, the Venison formula. My concern with this particular food would be the chicken fat as the third most abundant ingredient in the food, and the overall low protein level of 26%, which is lower than most grain-free foods. http://www.addictionfoods.com/usa/prod_dog_venison_dry.php
Studies at Purdue found an increased risk of bloat in dogs who were fed dry foods with chicken fat among the first 4 ingredients.
I'll look at the other formulas and see if they're any better.
The canned foods look good in terms of ingredients...no chicken fat in any of the formulas I looked at, and the company uses really nice expensive forms of vitamins. Defibnitely fine as a topping, and even for travel, but I'm not comfortable with the protein levels in this food as the sole source of protein in the diet. The protein levels in canned food always look much lower than dry food, because of all the moisture, so I don't know how to compare them, but 8% is very low, even for canned food.
Thanks again!!! I would have had no idea that the vitamins were nice expensive forms...LOL! Is there a canned food that you know about that would be better for a topper or even travel? I am still wanting grain free and I didn't think many canned foods were grain free which is why I was looking at the Addiction. I know Nature's Variety has grain free canned food but I would prefer to stay away from them...at least for now.
Honestly, none of the brands that make canned food are more reliable at this moment. There's Ziwi Peak, I know Dianne has mentioned that one. Otherwise, there's EVO, Wellness, Nature's Variety, Wysong, and Evangers making grain-free canned foods. All have their drawbacks in temrs of past recalls, etc.
I was afraid that is what you were going to say...LOL! Thank you for all your input. I always know that the info that I get from you is right on the money. It is very much appreciated!
The lamb and the kangaroo formulas did not have the chicken fat so high on the list- in fact, the kangaroo didn't include it at all, but the lamb formula had only 22% protein, which is extremely low, especially for a grain-free food, and the other formulas all had lower protein percentages as well.
