Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I didn't know our black labradoodle would end up with brown highlights around her mouth.  In looking at pics in this group, I guess it's not that uncommon.  Sara also has white hairs scattered throughout her coat.  Is that common too?

Her mom was a chocolate lab and dad was a white poodle.  Black must be the dominant gene, but the brown and white are showing up because of mom and dad?

Sara is only 9 mos. old.  How else is her coat likely to change?

Hi! Bella is 15 months now , her mom is a golden retriever & dad a standard parti black & white poodle. When we went on the waiting list for a puppy, we were hoping for a parti colored black & white & choose the female in the litter with the most white on her. She has a white patch on her chest & her coat seems to change with every trim. She has a lot of white hairs scattered throughout her coat, which is wavy with curls on her head. Her feet look more silver than the rest of her. It is really hard to capture her true coloring on a picture, but we think she is a beauty :) But it's that "doodle" temperment that won us over to this breed & continually amazes us. She is 66 pounds now & such a wonderfull dood !
Barney has white hairs around his eyes and a bunch on his bum poking out. It's actually quite cute! He too has reddish brown around his snout and legs. I love my multicoloured doodle!!!
My 15 month old black doodle Bella, has almost completely gray ears and has little gray hairs all over. It started when she was about 5 months old. She also has brown around her nose and mouth and my vet says that is probably from her saliva. I love the gray ears - it gives her character!! :)
Gus is exactly the same. He had brown by his mouth...his "eyebrows" are blondish-gray(?)...and he has white hairs scattered throughout his body. His mom was a chocolate lab and his dad was a standard white poodle also.
The white hairs are called "kemp" and are usually more coarse than the rest of the coat. It is common in the earlier generation Doodles. The brown facial hair is also common and I believe that someone mentioned below that this is a chemical reaction to the saliva...this is what I have heard too, but many black Doods get this...the light Doods get a redish color.
