Hi everyone!  I am thinking about changing Allie's food from Canidae to something else.  She has loose stools the majority of the time - we have had her stools tested 3 times and all 3 times they have diagnosed her with a "sensitive stomach," and keep giving us medication for the soft stools - to the point now that we don't need to bring in a sample - we can get the medication when needed.  I have been doing a lot of reading in the Food Group, and have searched under sensitive stomach's - but I am confused!  I have a few questions:  Because of her loose stools - should I be looking for a grain free food, or no?  I have my brands narrowed down to Fromm's (not grain free) and EVO (grain free).  I also have a question about treats, wondering if we should stop giving her any of the following:  We give her Milk Bone treats, Scooby Snacks (sometimes), Good Life Turkey & Apple, Blue Buffalo Pumpkin & Cinnamon.  For chewing, we get her Bully Sticks, and she has a deer antler.  She goes to Doggie Daycare, which I am going to ask them Tuesday (her next daycare day) not to give her anything other than what we provide for her. Any help would be appreciated!

This food stuff can be SO complicated!!!!! I found a perfect food in Orijen Adult... and I went and screwed it up. I just figured if I were a dog, I would have wanted to try the Orijen Regional Red - why not??? Wild Boar... Fresh Lamb... Sounds delish (lol)!!!! WELL... the only good thing that came out of that is now knowing EXACTLY what caused Allie's constipation problem. LAMB. That is the comparable ingredient in California Natural (when her constipation started) and Regional Red. So for a week now we have been trying to help the constipation and I'm so happy to finally have (hopefully) figured this out!!!! We are back on the Orijen Adult (scared to ever change again) and our stools are almost back to perfect! Thanks Food Group!
Sorry the Red didn't agree with Allie...it's Jack's favorite of the three Orijen flavors. Maybe you can try the 6 Fresh Fish next time.
I'm just happy to have finally narrowed it down! Maybe Allie wanted to save us some money? lol. I wouldn't have known what to do had it not been for the food group.
Good girl, Allie! The Red is the most expensive of all the kibbles out there!
I too have been having similar loose stool problems with Chester. He seems to love the salmon or fish Orijen formula, but I find it gives him awful "fish breath"! I know this may seem silly, but it makes "doodlekisses" from Chester less than desirable. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, did is go away over time?
Oh that is great news Kim. I am really happy about that!!!
Thanks Allyson! What a long road this has been! I'm so thankful for the help of the food group!
She should be getting PLAIN yogurt, and preferably an organic brand ~ we like "Natural High All Natural Organic Plain". "Brown Cow" is also very good. Have you tried canned pumpkin ~NOT pie filling with added sugar~ and green beans for the loose stools?
You can probably find something better than Milk Bone brand treats ~ how about bits of cheese or chicken.
ALL dog food should be grain -free. Dogs do not need grains and cannot digest them well. They are carnivores and [I believe] they are just fillers for dog food companies. There are a number of excellent grain-free dog foods out there. Check out these sites: www.thepetfoodlist.com/petfoods and www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html
Vicky, if you read through all the replies to this discussion prior to yours, you'll see that Kim did receive much of the same good advice and has implemented it. Allie is now on grain-free food, the Milkbones have been eliminated, and Allie is doing great.
We have lots and lots of carefully researched info here, and you will find many discussions about grain-free vs healthy grains, yogurt, pumpkin, probiotics, the nutritional needs of dogs, and really great resources on all of these subjects. We have people who feed homecooked, grain-free, and also foods that contain healthy grains...there are FG members whose dogs do well with all of these methods. We have found, and fact-based, impartial research has shown as well, that there is no "one size fits all" method of feeding dogs.
You are absolutely right! I didn't go back and read all the posts ~ and just realized her original post was from April!
So glad that Allie's doing so well.
Still a great group! Thanks.
Where or where do you find the canned pumpkin? All I can seem to find is the pie filling at the grocery store.
It should be in the canned vegetable section. Some areas of the country have had shortages for the past year, though.
