It's a boy! His name is Floyd, after Pink Floyd, and he is a small guy at 5.6 pounds. He is a cuddler and wants LOTS of love. We are having a tough time getting him to respond to eating and Shelly said he was not nursing at first so this may be a continuation of that. This, of course, has made any kind of training difficult today. He has not warmed to his crate just yet so our first night was tough!!! I'm not sure if all this change is causing this but we have our first vet appointment tomorrow so hopefully she can shed some light on what to do. He's a great puppy and follows us every where! We will get there but it will take some time! We have pictures so check them out on our page!
One thing that we did and it worked great was a "Snuggle Puppy" It has a heartbeat and you can also use the warmer. She still loves it after 7 months (minus the heartbeat and warmer). Brings it around the house, shaking it, we call it her "Baby Buddy". She slept through everynite and we crated her in a bigger crate for her to grow into with the divider piece. I made her a blanket and pillow and brought the blanket when we picked her up and all the siblings got to lay on it, so it had their smell. Even if we hadn't done that, I really think it was the Snuggle puppy that was a big plus. She was also in our room next to our bed. Maybe this will help....
Congratulations, love the name. He is adorable.
We used a stuffed animal too. Give him time. He just got taken away from a very secure environment. It may take a few days to adapt. We didn't keep Lucca in our room but I used a video baby monitor that I set up with the camera eye on the crate. This way at night I could see and hear him. I also added more cushion to the crate. We had the wire crate and I put the foam insert in it plus the fleece one with the sides. He loved to snuggle in the corner.
Remember at night when you take him out to pee...quiet, quiet, quiet praise, then put him back in his crate. If he gets too excited he may think it's playtime and then you definitely won't get any sleep.
We have ALL gone through this and it seems like forever now but each day will get better and better...at least until they become teenagers:)
What a cute little guy. Congratulations. Sounds like he is definitely wanting to bond with you, even though it'll take a little time for him to get used to his new environment. Love, patience and consistency will make each day easier. Your vet's advice will definitely help. Enjoy your new addition.
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! It's been a challenge but we have started to get a little routine down and we are learning Floyd's potty habits so we can better predict when he needs to go. He is starting to get the idea of the poochie bells and of course needs practice. Last night was better. We had to come up with an alternate version of a crate that allowed him to really see and feel one of us, mainly Wass! We slept better so things are coming together. We start early socialization puppy kindergarten on Sunday which should be lots of fun!
Congratulations on your new addition!!! (Sorry to be so late in chiming in here - I finally have time this weekend to catch up on old emails, etc.) Floyd is ADORABLE!!! Can you refresh my memory as to who his mommy/daddy are?
Thank you so much Linda! Floyd's mother is Anja and his father is Casey. He is a handful for sure but he is a great puppy and has learned so much in the 5 weeks he's been with us!
Anja and Casey are so beautiful, it's no wonder Floyd is this adorable!!! I'm curious ... were there any red colored pups in the litter? I'm thinking it might be fun to get a redheaded doodle in the future. (Both of my grandkids are redheads - ha!)
There were 2 darker light chocolate puppies. They almost had more red highlights. They may get a little more reddish as they get older. Very cute too! It was a tought decision!!
