LOVED that book. I'm huge King fan and it was one of my all-time faves. For some reason I like anything where he has a group of people trapped in a small space.
I'm reading The Darkest Evening of the Year by Koontz. It actually has a foster dog theme and lots of other crazy stuff, but you might like the Golden Retriever rescue part.
Oh, it is kind of light horror, if you can imagine that. It is about a downs syndrone girl who is treated about like a dog from a puppy mill. The ghost (or angel) of a golden retriever saves the day. Kind of different for Koontz, but I liked it.
I really liked it too. It's disturbing on so many levels, yet at the same time it's compelling. He clearly has an amazing insight into how bonded many of us are with our dogs and what they bring to our lives. I read it in a day....I was obsessed and couldn't put it down.
A couple of weeks ago I finished Leila Meacham’s Roses. The saga spans three generations in Texas and had the feeling of The Thorn Birds while I was reading it. Absolutely loved it! I highly recommend it.
I've read a couple of good ones in the past few weeks.
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake by Aimee Bender: it's weird, but if you don't mind some supernatural stuff, it's very well written.
Columbine by Dave Cullen: this blew my mind, and affected me for days. He's supposedly the leading expert on the Columbine shootings, and the book goes through the whole mess in exhausting detail. Not beach reading, but excellent.
So Much for That by Lionel Shriver: if you've read any of her other books (We Need to Talk About Kevin, The Post-Birthday World), you'll like this. It's a harsh review of the US health care system wrapped up in a good story.
I'm reading the latest Sue Miller right now - the name is escaping me - but it's really good.
