I know this has been brought up some but since I'm new to the sight I'd thought I'd ask.
We're considering getting pet insurance on Dexter...we're noticing he's scratching & sneezes alot now after coming in from outside. We think it's possibly allergies & if so then I'm sure the vet may recommend shots.
My question is ....what is the best one to have? How do we go about getting it?Does anyone else have insurance & has it been helpful?
Any suggestions are appreciated from our doodle loving friends =]

Hi Team, I just did an analysis of VPI Superior Plan plus CareGuard Core coverage (covers preventative and this is what we have had for the last 2 plan years) versus PetPlan. I was pretty surprised at the difference. VPI lets you see all of your previous submittals so I took that, backed out the reimbursements I received for wellcare and then plugged in the deductible per incident and the % covered as per PetPlan's info on their website. Note - this assumes that PetPlan would cover all of the doctor's visits (and waste charges, etc which are not covered via VPI).

In year 1, my net cost for insurance via VPI (meaning, what I paid versus what I received back) was $203.41. NOTE: This includes $310 that wasn't covered by VPI for Rouser's neuter (we were covered through a different program so it didn't qualify).

In year 2 (a much better gauge of what's to come), my net cost for insurance via VPI was $67.58.

I compared this with the following plans at PetPlan: Silver $100 deductible at 100%, 90% and 80%; and Silver $200 deductible at 100%, 90%, and 80%.

The only plan that came anywhere close to the Year 2 VPI cost was the $100 deductible at 80% which would have had a total cost of $99.36.

Take a look at the attached file if you're interested. It breaks everything out per vet visit so you can get an idea of the standard fees per incident - note, we are in San Diego so we tend to have higher vet bills (making it that much more likely that you wouldn't approach your deductible).

VPI has not raised our rate in three years. PetPlan covers some hereditary issues (does anyone have the list of what is not covered as they clearly say "some' in many places?).

The issues that Rouser has had (pretty standard):
-Three eye infections - VPI ruled two of them as non-related so we were reimbursed for both even though they were within 3 weeks of each other.
-A puncture wound from a bite.
-Three bouts of stomach issues - all for different things.
-Three sets of vaccines/wellcare
-Teeth cleaning
-Heartworm prevention pills (covered by VPI)
