Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Over the past severl weeks Astro has had severe bouts of what we call the poopy flu.  Found nothing in initial exam, fecal test and Cocc test.  Treated him as if he picked up something in daycare.  He was doing great until he ended his meds and then it came back strong.  Put him back on the meds for a longer course and then one week into he starts up again and also presents with vomitting.  Off to the vet we go.  After major blood work checking Kidneys, Liver, Pancrease, Electrolights, etc....and xrays....and $$$ everything checks out glowingly.  Also did fecals again.  Presenting intestines full of gas and tenderness but nothing wrong with his labs.  Next to test would be Lepto and Addison's.  Nothing in his labs suggest Addison's be he shows some symptoms as he does for Lepto and yes we have had wildlife in the yard recently.  After a day of being poked and prodded I agree with the vet to go ahead and treat for Lepto...four weeks of meds and no dog contact vs doing the test.  Is that silly to do?  The vet kept blood in case I changed my mind overnight to run the test.

I would do the test since they have the blood from before the antibiotics started and keep the meds going until results.
The PCR is best-
What is PCR?
PCR is the type of test- they are a few out there but this is the most sensitive.
I would run it too. Best to know, hopefully, what you're dealing with.
I would run it. I know it is more money, but you have been dealing with this for a while. And Peri needs to see her boyfriend soon.
I would run it too.... this year I have decided NOT to give the Lepto vaccine due to what I have read and heard, as well as the reaction she had the last time to that shot. she doesn't swim and does not drink from puddles... so I hope I am correct in foregoing the shot! ???? I hope Astro feels better real soon!
Our vet seemed to think because we have recently had challenges with a skunk in the yard and the occasional opposum, deer, etc. that he could have come into contact with urine/waste and caught it that way. Not from swimming? Or daycare too because if a dog gets it they "shed" it in the urine. Doodle is stuck at home for four weeks with no playdates. Poor Doodle.
Lepto can be spread from contact with contaminated souil as well as water. Soil can be contaminated if an infected animal (skunk, rodent, whatever) has urinated there. This is why my vet's office is recommending the lepto vaccine for all dogs who ever go outside, even if only in their own backyards, because lepto is a very nasty disease. It's also zoonotic, which means humans can get it from their dogs.
Yvonne, I'm so sorry Astro is sick. I think I would run the test. Sometimes it doesn't show up in bloodwork during the initial 10 days after contracting it, but it sounds like this has been going on for longer than that.
Hugs to you & your boy, I hope he's feeling better soon.
Humans can get it??? Yuck!
gets better and better...
We don't need a playdate anytime soon (just kidding!).
I hope he doesn't have it. But then I hope his sickness goes away or you will have to find another explanation. Poor dood. I miss y'all.
And I've been giving and getting so many doodle kisses lately....ooops.
