Tara is a mini ALD and when we go for rides she normally sits on my lap (I am the passenger). If the sun should shine in on her from any window she will either 1) creep up my arm and shoulder in an attempt to get out of it OR 2) more often she will DIVE for the floorboard area at my feet. Sometimes on longer rides she will snuggle in and sleep on the floor but around town she just sits there watching my lap....waiting....waiting for the shade to reappear. And the moment it does she will give me "the look"...meaning she wants back up on my lap. At that point I have the choice of saying "no, stay" or "okay". She will not come up unless she is invited -but those eyes!! Who can resist Doodle eyes?? Consequently, especially this time of year, I spend most of my time dealing with the up and down Doodle. But keep in mind she does this ALL YEAR! It can be 30 degrees in the car and if the sun hits her she dives. She is a Sun Diver. ALSO, she will not play ball in the sun (even in the winter) and she tries to find shady areas to do her business as well. I mean if there is one square foot of shade in the yard she will go there to "go". So, I am wondering if anyone else out there has experienced this or something similar with their Dood?
yes- I noticed this especially this summer- Tucker will find the smallest shaded area and lay in it. Unlike my Yorkie who will bath in the sun and find the smallest sun spot even in the house.
Spud. He seems sensitive to the sun. He is not as dramatic anymore as Tara, but he avoids the sun if possible. It was very noticeable when he was a puppy. Spud is not as bad a I am though. I prefer no lamps or lights. If no one lived with me I would walk around in the dark or very soft expensive lighting. :) Nope, I don't have blue eyes--brown. and I am worse than my blue-eyed son. Some of us see better in low lights. With Spud, he looked really uncomfortable. A doctor once told me I had big pupils. Dogs too?
Calla's pupils are always more dilated, by far, than Luca's. I asked the vet about it but she did not think it was significant. But they both seek out the shade to lie in.
I am still hoping Tara will out grow it. It sounds like Spud has out grown it somewhat so that is encouraging. It is really not a problem except in the car. She has already trained us not to throw the ball into the sun, not to put her wading pool into the sun, etc. So our training is coming along nicely.:>)
"....she has already trained us.... " Funny :)
Maybe some of the windpw shades that parents place in the back windows for infants will help you in the car. The only we do not is not walk into the West sunset in the evenings--or time it just right. Yep, I'm trained too
Funny you should suggest the shades. My DH picked one up the other day but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. It should help the side window issue or at least distract her for while trying to figure out what the weird thing hanging in the window is...
