I am having a terrible time with Rufus' name.  For some reason I want to call him Paddy!  He just does not look like a Rufus to me, and I find when I go to call him, Rufus just doesn't come out of my mouth with any ease.  Half the time I have to stop and try and remember his name (yes, I did just have a birthday but hopefully that isn't the problem just yet).  I didn't even stop to think about what I would name him, but Paddy (Paddington) is just on my brain for some reason!  He knows his name really well, so I don't want to change his name since this isn't his forever home!  Guess I need to practice saying Rufus, Rufus, Rufus, Rufus, Rufus, ........

You want to call him Paddy because it rolls off the tongue a lot easier than Rufus.
I think if he's Paddy to you, that's fine. You could start calling him Paddy Rufus or Rufus Paddy, then, occasionally just Paddy. My dog Angus, responds to Angus, Angus Baggins, Baggins, Baby, Goose, Junior (?), Angnes (!), and more. Half the time I just call him Baby; I guess that's my pet name for him (no pun intended). I don't think he has any identity problems - he's just delightful. Hope this helps.
