There was an item today on TV  today about children getting salmonella related to dog food. The advice was to not allow children under 5, to handle dog food or dishes. More importantly, I think, is to try to feed safe food from reliable suppliers. There was specualtion that the children could have also picked up the salmonella form kissing and handling the dog. It would be hard and not very gratifying try to prevent that. Of course, not to start a controversy, I think raw feeders, have to be especially careful regarding this issue. Home cooking is probably the safest bet although I feed kibble myself. The Food Group often has information on product recalls for salmonella and other issues.

I HATE this news. The CDC can go on and on about washing hands every time you pet or touch a dog...but seriously...HOW does anyone whose dog lives indoors DO that? It's impossible. I'd have to run to the sink constantly even if I wasn't purposely petting my dog. And dogs and kids? They share spit all day long!
I know, it's all very scary.
I may be naive, but I don't think this was as big a problem in the past. I blame this prevalence of salmonella on sloppy quality control and manufacturing practices; big companies cutting corners to save a few bucks by using cheap labor and the cheapest supply sources.
I've swapped spit with dogs all my life, as has every member of my immediate family, and intend to continue doing so. I think maybe we have to more vigilant about the products we use rather than focusing on the "damage control" aspects.
Haha! This makes me laugh because before I was a "dog person" I was always telling the kids to "WASH YOUR HANDS!!!" right after touching someone's dog. Now, as a dog loving person, I feel like my dog is the cleanest, most perfect thing hands could touch! ;)
Very true! I get daily kisses from mine and I don't every wash up. I do after shaking a stranger's hand though....
The past two recalls we've posted have been for salmonella contamination in dog food & treats, from two different companies. Considering that one of these was a very large recall of Iams & Eukanuba, which are widely available, very popular brands, I can certainly see where there would be lots of children exposed to it. I'm sure many people are unaware of these recalls and also unaware that there is a danger to humans as well as the dogs.
Thanks for posting this, F. Here is a link to The Food Group discussion on current recall information. I'm proud to say we usually have the info on dog food recalls posted in a very timely manner, often before it's posted elsewhere.
Current Recall Information
That's just what I was thinking. The key is to feed the best food we can. I know things change constantly, especially the quality of dog food, but as long as we stay apprised as best as we can, we will have a better chance of avoiding a situation like this!
Great website written by a reliable source!
