My little 6 year old niece is here today and she has had a good time playing with Rufus. She has been trying to understand how come I have him but he is leaving. I explained to her this morning that he had a home but they didn't want him any longer so I am keeping him to find him a new home! She said "Well, that is just SAD!"
Then this afternoon we were giving him a bath and getting him all ready for tomorrow and she was again asking me about keeping dogs and finding them new homes. I explained that I'm a "Foster Mom" and that I just keep them till we find them a new home and take care of them until then. So I told her that I thought that when she grows up that she should be a foster mom to, and she said "Well, when I grow up I'm going to be an Ice Cream Truck Driver" ....... speechless for a moment, then I said, "well, do you think you could do both" and she said "Oh, of course I could do both!"
Kids do say the darndest things. I often interview children in my work but not one has ever said they'd be an ice cream truck driver. What a good idea from a child's perspective.
You can rest assured that she is learning more about animals and specifically dogs every time she comes here. She learns about training, and how to behave, and now fostering etc. She loves animals to start with and she loves learning to train them etc. She'll be one of us someday I'm willing to bet.
Sher, doesn't it make you feel great to know that not only have you personally saved and fostered so many....in fact too many to mention, but you are inspiring a new gneration of animal lovers and rescuers?
