Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Went shopping for doodle food today, and lo and behold, my favorite, convenient Pet Supplies Plus (to whom I make monthly payments equal to or greater than my real estate taxes) is finally stocking Acana! Whoop-de-doo!

I bought a 5.5 lb bag of their Wild Prairie formula, which is their chicken based grain-free formula. It was $4.00 less than the same sized bag of Orijen Adult, the Orijen fowl-based formula. The reason is, Acana is lower in protein than Orijen, (33% vs 40%) and higher in fiber, (3.5 vs 2.5) the result of there being less animal protein and more fruits & vegetables in the formula. Animal protein is the single most expensive ingredient in anything, so the Orijen-Acana price difference now makes sense to me.

I still have a little of Jack's Orijen left, so he probably won't get the Acana until Wednesday a.m. I can't wait to see what he thinks of it! His inital reaction won't mean much, because like most men, he is very excited by something new but tires of it easily. ;)

Stay tuned for Jackdoodle's review of Acana Wild Prairie, later this week!

Yeah Jack. I 'll keep a watch on this post. Can't wait to see what you think. SPUD is in love, but Starlit still seems not to be eating as much as she did on CN. Don't know what that means. Could be it is just to hot to eat.

I do have a question though-- Acana can you switch flavors? I remember that Fromms was interchangeable so you could buy different bags and flavors without a gradual change in foods and the dogs can get a variety. Can this be done with Acana? Hope so.
Yes, you can rotate thru the Acana flavors and it's recommended that you do. I do it with the three Orijen formulas.
Also, the Acana is much more nutrient dense than CN, so even if Starlit eats less, she may still be getting the same amount of calories, and probably more protein, than before.
Thank You :)
I tried Marlow on Acana Wild Prairie. He was typical and ate it the first couple of days and then slowed down and was very finicky with it. His poop was very hard to the point that he acted like he was constipated, poor guy. We are now back on Fromm and this problem seems better now.
Quinn is the same with Orijen and Acana - there seems to be something in both that he doesn't like! Even when it's a new flavor, he's not interested. So frustrating because I'd like to feed one of the two.
Have you tried Go! Natural Grain Free by Petcurean? Gavin is doing really well on this and it is highly rated (6 stars). With all of the research that I have read, it is very highly regarded. The only down side is there is only one flavour. However, Gavin is not a chow-hound by any means, but seems to like it day in an out.
I have been wanting to try that, but I've had trouble finding it! The only dry food that holds Quinn's interest is Nature's Variety Instinct, the rabbit flavor. I know it's a good food but I worry about the NV recalls. I was so excited when my local place started carrying Acana, but he really does not like it. Grr.
I hope Jackdoodle likes it. It is Tyson’s favorite food by FAR! It is the only one he eats (although the Wild Prairie is the only one that is too bland for him). He adores the Grasslands and Pacifica—he gets so excited at mealtimes and will dance around, bark, and go through all his tricks impatiently waiting for us to feed him. This is the only food he has ever eaten so happily for so long (been on it since December). I love Acana and am so happy Tyson has finally found a food he loves and that I love to feed him! :)
We went through lots of different dog foods and even tried raw diet when I was getting Hondo back into eating after his liver failure (first time). Groucho Too will eat most foods, but poodle grudgingly, but both dogs do well on and like Solid Gold dry food (adult formula). Along with that we also give them cooked food (Happy Dog) and different kinds of meat (human quality) from Safeway. I have finally got the cooking for my dogs down and now sometimes their food looks enticing to us. Yesterday I cooked 6 chicken breasts (3 for us and 3 for the dogs) and theirs looked more appealing to me than ours did (Chicken in Mustard Sauce). My husband actually took some of their surloin strips when he was making some pasta. Maybe that is why he wants their containers sterilized every time I put new food in them, but he says it is because of Hondo's previous health problems. Fun, isn't it??
The Wild Prairie from Acana arrived this AM. The dogs loved it so much they started chomping away at the approximately !/4 to 3/4 mixture with Solid Gold Hund"N Flocken. They really haven't been eating in the AM. Calla ate most of her food with only SG left. Luca ate about half of his with only SG left. The votes are in. Now we'll see about the "outcome".
Funny how they can pick out what they want in a mixture and leave the rest in a mess on the floor. How is that possible with no opposing thumbs?
Those doodle tongues are very versatile.
