Astro is off his meds...and his stool has gone from normal to a total mess. I have never in my life smelled something so bad. It is olive green in color - mucousey. Developing a food allergy or Gall bladder or Pancrease? Any thoughts? I have to decide what tests to run next by 7am tomorrow.
Thanks, everybody, for ideas and sharing past experiences. Last night when I called the vet pretty upset with the green mucouse liquid poo I was given two ideas....Astro is developing a food intollerance or pancreatic insufficiency or gall bladder problem. I think mainly because we have ruled everything else out. I decided to take the food approach and follow advice from my fellow DKers and go for home cooked chicken and rice. Made perfect sense to me and I remember as a kid feeding it to our dog when he had upset. So I faxed vet a note to say here is my plan: Chicken/Rice/Pumpkin/Yougurt. She called back and said we need to find something he has not eaten...a limited lingredient diet for 8 to 10 weeks. She looked up the food she knew he was on and said we cannot do rice. We have done lamb (Blue), bison and vennison (TOTW) so that leaves us rabbitt and duck. And we cannot do yougurt as it will counteract the medicine he is on. ??? So she has recommended Royal Canine Duck & Potatoe. With help from Allyson and Karen I'm searching a better Duck & Potatoe option. That is my update for now. Again, thank you everyone!
I just left you a comment about all this, but for anyone else who's reading this discussion, I want to clarify that yogurt does NOT counteract medicine. It is simply a probiotic. Every vet I've ever had recommends yogurt for dogs who are on antibiotics, including Jack's specialist. I hate to say it, but your vet does not seem to have a good grasp of basic nutrition or digestive issues.
For sure - I have always been told to add yogurt to T's food when he is sick with stomach crud.
I think the Natural Balance (Dick Van Patten's) looks like something to try as Karen suggested - they said it is at Petco (may only be online)?
Yogurt contains beneficial bacteria to repopulate the gut since antibiotics wipe out good and bad bacteria. I don't think the vets plan is any better than the one we proposed but that's from a human medicine perspective : ) Is there even a rice intolerance? I will go look. It certainly must be rare.
I just posted this on your page Yvonne, but what FINALLY made Taquito turn the corner 3 years ago was switching vets. New vet said:
1. stop with the cocktails of meds.
2. stop switching food.
3. stop adding so much to "entice" him to eat (messing with stomach).
4. go back with chicken and rice - slowly introduced food back into it (Solid Gold in our case)
I know the core problems are not the same, but I think the solution might be similar.
My gut is telling me the same...My mom made Astro a big batch so why not. I have nothing to loose. Chicken and Rice tonight till Daddy gets home. And then we will go from there.
