I need to change Bandit over to new adult food. We are choosing Wellness brand. They have a Small Breed mix but I am not sure what qualifies as Small Breed. Bandit is an Austrailian Labradoodle, 8 months old and weighs 26 lbs. He probably should weigh about 22 lbs, hence the need to get him off puppy food asap. He has a tendancy to eat A LOT, sleep A LOT so maybe this would be good vs. a higher calorie food like his sis Rosey has. She probably burns 2000 calories a day:)
Wellness considers their "small breed" foods appropriate for dogs under 25 lbs at maturity. 25 lbs or under as an adult seems to be the generally accepted definition of a "small breed" dog. I would stay with regular formulas for Bandit. The "small breed" and "large breed' formulas are really meant for dogs who are at the extreme ends of the spectrum. I wouldn't feed a large breed formula to Jack, and he ranges around 85 lbs.
TY for still being up! Okay, I will then be giving them both Wellness Salmon & Lamb formula. If he does need to lose weight and we are still trying to train him and he is soooo food crazy any recommendations?
I think the Salmon and Lamb are not from the CORE and are not grainfree - if that matters to you. We just bought it by mistake.
Do you mean small breed or small bites?
Lose weight! Our guys really gained on EVO and so I understand what you are talking about in your food search. The fish offerings seem to be a bit lower calorie. When we switch we will us the Wellness Core fish choice.
No, the Salmon & Lamb is one of the Wellness" Super 5" formulas, and it contains healthy grains. It's slightly lower in calories than many of the grain frees. The grain-frees are not always the best choice for "chowhounds", because they are nutrient dense and you feed less, which makes the bottomless pit kind of dogs unhappy.
I will say that when i first switched Jack to better foods from Nutro, I started with the Super 5 mix, possibly the Salmon & Lamb formula, and he had very bulky stools on it. But all dogs are different, and what works for one may not work for another.
oh goodness, whilst, I won't be getting out the measuring tape, Rosey is only going about once per day now so it seems like a bit more but I will keep an eye on it.
Nutro also contains icky stuff that makes the stool volume very small, so that was also a factor in the sudden "giant doodies" when I switched him. But foods with grains almost always produce greater stool volume than grain-frees do.
I just tried the carrots, they were a NO GO. even though he will eat grass, leaves, mulch, lightening bugs in-flight, acorns, dog toy stuffing, pretty much anything he is not supposed to..... Carrots were left abandoned on the ground:(
Jackdoodle says, "Bandit! My man! You're growing up in old JD's footsteps! Tell these Food Groupies that realmen doodles eat meat, not vegetables!"
Jackdoodle's mom says, "Yeah, Jack, maybe that's why you hit 90 lbs earlier this summer, when you should be around 80."
