Have you ever seen a bird who actually "posed" for a picture?  I found one today.  This little guy was amazing.  He sat there in the flowers and let me get really close to take his picture.  At first, I was afraid he couldn't fly.  Not the case...he flew off when I was finished.  Amazing!  Here he is....

Jane - These are beautiful!!!!! What a wonderful treat for you!
What type of bird is this friendly guy? Certainly not native to NE Ohio. Very nice pictures Jane.
I have no idea what kind of bird this is. I was out to lunch with a bunch of girlfriends, and he landed right next to our table (yes, we were eating outside). I was going to the park later to take flower pictures, so I had my camera in my purse. He really seemed to being enjoying our conversation, and was in no hurry to leave. I will readily admit the conversation was going downhill in reference to my photographing "the bird" at the point when he decided it was time to fly away.
Great shots, thanks for sharing!
I tried to look up a match but failed. These are simply beautiful pictures.
Jane, Your pictures are great. My guess for your unindentified bird is an American Goldfinch(female). Native to the US and Canada. It is a tiny bird and likes to feed on thistle. We occassionally get them at our bird feeder. I've added the photo from the Petersons Field Guide.

If you google images of the American Goldfinch you will find the perfect match for your bird.
How lovely!
How "tweet" of him (sorry, couldn't resist- lol) to stay there and let you snap some photos! :) What a beautiful bird, Jane!

BTW, it looks as though your camera may be set to lock the focus on the "nearest" object (which in this case is the leaf on the left side and some of the dried leaves on the thistle below the bird) instead of in the "center" of the frame. This can lead to a tremendous amount of frustration, especially when you KNOW you got the subject centered and the exposure and lighting are good, but you still end up with blurry shots. (I learned this lesson the hard way, many years ago.)
Who knew? Thanks so much Linda...time to get the instruction manual out.
Linda, how do you change the 'lock' on the focus? Do I have to read my manual?
Ha, this may be the day you've been dreading : )
NOooooooooooo!
