I have been looking for something for Quincy to chew on that will last more than a few seconds. I've come across rawhides and such that say they are a product of Canada or US but are actually made in Colombia or Brazil. Does anyone know if these are a better alternative to Chinese made stuff, we are trying to avoid that.
I do agree that American made dog products are a better bet. All that I am saying is that you always hear about bad dog products that are made in China but I haven't heard anything about bad dog products from Colombia.
Yet. :)
Unfortunately, some of us have learned the hard way not to trust any products we give our dogs until we've researched it. Nobody had heard about melamine in products from China, either, until it killed a few thousand dogs.
Well you aren't going to hear about it by researching it. I never said that you shouldn't research the products that you give to your dog if they come from Colombia. Of course you should research it no matter where it comes from. You never hear about anything until it is too late. One of the best dog clinics is in Brazil. That is a good sign. I just said that I would try it and that the products from Brazil and Colombia are better than the ones from China but I did agree that if you buy from the US it is better.
It is not about the country so much as it is about the supply chain. The store doesn't order the products directly from the manufacturer in Brazil, Colombia, China, or wherever. An American company contracts the ingredients through independent food brokers who take bids from these foreign sources. So there is a long supply chain without regulation. The foreign supplier, the foreign company, the broker, and finally the American company that packages and distributes the product. The shorter the supply chain, the better the quality control. An American company that buys its own ingredients directly from a U.S. supplier, or better yet, prodcues them itself, is better able to control what goes into the product. These are the kinds of things we can research.
I really don't like the smell of bully sticks - my husband doesn't mind it however. We have 1 of the 2 we bought (yes made in USA - Texas in fact) they were so expensive so I know I have to let her have it but ewww! Does anyone else feel this way or is it just my imagination?
Ya, My Dad doesn't like the smell either. If you have carpet, I wouldn't advise you to give the bully stick to her on the carpet. It will make it smell and she might chew the carpet later. Just a suggestion......
Donna, if you can find them beef tracheas are what last the longest for Jackdoodle. I can only find them at one specialty pet boutique store in my area, and they're sold loose, like bulk foods.
Old West products are also all made in the U.S. and they have some basted knuckle bones that might work for you.
Thanks for all the ideas, haven't had any luck finding antlers or bully sticks around here. I have one more place to check and then I guess I'll have to order online. We are down to only a couple of Nylabones and he only chews on these briefly. Quincy does like chewing carrots but he doesn't eat it and what a mess he makes.
