At 6 am this morning we awoke to the sound of Oliver throwing up in his crate. We jumped out of bed, got him out of there and he started wretching again. He threw up 3 more times, until there was nothing but water coming up, he had gone to his bowl and took a drink, and threw that up too. He threw up on my bed, ugh, so at dawn we were stripping the bed too. Ira took him out and he had bad diarrhea, I couldn't imagine what he had eaten, I didn't see anything in the throw up that looked strange. I tried to give him some ice cubes and he wouldn't even look at them, and he loves ice cubes, so we went to the vet to be there when he opened. The vet checked him out, listened to his belly, and heard lots of gurgling and gas sounds. He had no fever and actually seemed to perk up at the vets office, of course. Well we are taking it one step at a time, he gave him a shot to calm down the stomach, and stop the vomitting and diarrhea, and told me to just try some ice in a few hrs. I brought him home, he went to sleep for a bit, then I gave him a few ice cubes that he ate. I made some cooked chicken and rice for later, but the vet said to go easy, and maybe just a little rice for now. He is not even looking for food at this point, so I am not pushing it. What a day, I was so scared when he started doing this...I worry about dehydration, so I am glad he is at least taking cubes. I just spoke with my vet, and he said to call in am to tell himhow he is doing, but go gradually with food for a few days. I can't imagine what he ate that caused this...Any advice for us???

I have no advice but feel your pain and worry. My best thoughts and wishes to Oliver that he is all better soon!
Thank you Suzann, I appreciate your kind thoughts.for Oliver, especially with what u have going on right now. I replied to your discussion, and hope that Bandit is coming home with you tonight....
Sadly I have been there too many times with my chihuahua. Really follow the vet's instructions and trust me, do not worry if Oliver will not eat today. Many times my vet says to not even try the first day when their tummies are sensitive. After one day of that shot, he will feel much better.

Another thing my vet tells us to do is to feed popsicles (WITH SUGAR - not those artificially flavored ones). That helps keep their electrolytes up. Maybe give that a try?

Calm down and just let him rest tonight. Tomorrow if you are still worried and he is not perking up or drinking water, take him back in.

Who knows what caused it. You just never know. Too bad they can't talk. Keep us posted! Thinking of you!!!! I have been there/done that and it is always a pretty crappy feeling. Excuse my use of that word but it really is. HUGS
Thanks Allyson for your kind thoughts and words of advice...He really is perking up a bit now, and it has been about 30 min since the two spoons of rice and chicken mixture, all seems well. He keeps going to his bowl place and looking at me with such sad eyes...But no more until tomorrow...
Cheryl, just responded below - if Oliver keeps that down for an hour or two, try another 2T after. Just don't overdo and make sure he doesn't throw up again! Good luck.
thanks Allyson, I will do that if he is looking for food later...
Talk? Half the time we don't know what it is when it happens to us.
Hi. Sorry to hear about Oliver but this happens from time to time. You did the right thing taking him to the vet. I went through this a few months ago with my Lab Lucy and I read that when you start to feed them again to try Pumpkin. I used it then and gave her Pumpkin only for 1 day, then gradually added boiled rice( no the converted rice, but the real stuff). She was fine in a few days.
My Sister's Lab had the same thing last month so we started with the Pumpkin and followed the same routine. She too was ok.
The Pumpkin is suppose to help settle their stomach and the dogs love the taste of it so will eat it when they may not eat anything else .

I keep several cans handy now and will use them if my Doods ever need them. Check with your vet of course and if he\she says it's ok then stock up.

Good Luck !
I went to three supermarkets here for pumpkin, and none had the real kind, just the pie filling. I have used that too and it worked well with my other dogs thru the years. I need to find a store that has it, and keep some cans in the house. I just thought about another store, Whole Food Market, it is not too far, I will go there tonight and see if they have it...thanks for your kind words and thoughts...
You might be able to find a real pumpkin at a farm market or someplace like that tomorrow.
I got it tonight at Whole Foods, but that was a good thought, I will have to remember that.
I don't have any advice, but I hope Oliver feels better soon.
