My minilab goes crazy every time the vacuum cleaner is in site... Housekeeping nightmare

Teddy has improved in so many ways now that he is going on 7 months.  However one problem remains a biggie!  He goes crazy over the vacuum or over trying to sweep the floor or even using a duster to dust furnture.  I have to place him in his crate but even then he barks and tries to get out and generally seems like I have a wild animal in the crate like a tazmanna devil dog instead of a little doodle!  He gets so upset that his paws sweat and his mouth and beard are sweaty too.  I have ended up avoiding cleaning or placeing him in daycare on Sat just to get cleaning and errands done!

Has anyone else had this issue and will it get better with more exposure to the cleaning routine or with him getting older?  Oh and funny thing is that at daycare he actually follows the person with the big broom and the floor sweeper!  Any suggestions?

It could be a game but, have you tried "touch it"? When Lucca was little he was scared of the vacuum, dishwasher and many other things. I would go to the vacuum with it off and say "touch it" as I was touching it or pretending I was petting it. Then he would go to it and smell it. Turn it on and do the same thing. It really worked with many things. He was petrified of helium balloons because of the movement and the noise. The Touch It game really works. They have to feel comfortable. He might be scared of the vacuum from a past memory or just the noise. Around the holidays my daughter accidentally sucked up Lucca's tail with the vacuum!!! He got real quiet for day but he's been ok with it since.
Well I tried to let Teddy get used to the vacuum with it being just in the room and not on but he attacked it and I was afraid he would punch a hole in the bag part. I think he does see the sweeping motion as a game and probably the noise of the vacuum hurts his ears...but I am by myself here and can't seem to figure out a good way to de-sensitize him to this needed part of everyday life! He is only 6 months and I got him at 8 weeks so I doubt it is over a prior trauma although I may be the one traumatizing him!
What about putting a treat near it? If he touches it (the vacuum) without backing away and barking, reward and praise him with the treat.
That's a good idea I will try this but tomorrow I think he will go to the day care and I will do a very thorough cleaning!!!
Day care is good:)
Check out the discussion in "Doodle anxiety and ......." Group under the discussuin "Thundershirt" We are talking about the similar situation to this. It may be helpful for you to read it.
Wow that is an interesting product and maybe worth trying! Thanks
You are welcome! I think few of us got them, but we are still figuring out how much it helps... I just started using it, too. For Charlie, it has been helpful to take the edge of her anxiety....
I saw this on It's Me or the Dog once and the dog was extremely aggressive toward the vacuum. Victoria put treats near the vacuum while it was off and then put them on the vacuum while it was off until he was very comfortable with it. Seems like then she turned it on for short increments and would treat him. She may have even brought out a new toy for the dog when she vacuumed. My memory's failing me, sorry! I bet you could youtube the episode.
Oh I Love that show and have seen several episodes but don't remember that one...makes sense tho to treat treat treat so when I have the time and patience to devote to this I will try it! Thanks
