My big Doodle boy, Dooley had a seizure today.  It was his first.  Thank goodness my children were at school and that I was home with my wife.  After it was over we took him to the vet and they did some blood work.

My question to those in the group, does one seizure generally mean more are on the way?  In what little research I have done so far, this seems to be the case, but again, I have not really dug deep enough.

Just looking for some advice.

Thanks,

John

Welcome in our group John! You will get heaps of help, moral support and info here.
There are hundreds of seizure triggers. Some dogs only have one, which could be from eating something poisonous (toad, plant etc.). If a dog has 2 seizures or more it is usually Epilepsy. My dog had his first 2 seizures at 18 months, then 9 weeks nothing. We looked at all different causes. At the end his Pedigree gave us the answer: Genetic inherited Epilepsy from his Grandfather, who is from a well know epileptic bloodline. Breeding in those is usually stopped by responsible breeders. Well, ours wasn't. Strange thing, his mother does NOT have Epilepsy. Sometimes it jumps a generation or only the males get it???
A great website sites to get you started http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/site_map.htm
Let's hope it was only a one off for your dog! If NOT help is on the way!!!

I have heard many instances of "one and done"......and sadly, cases where one does lead to more seizures. It looks like you got the link I was going to provide from Kirsy & Jasper, the info there should be helpful. I will be thinking of you, your family and especially Dooley in the days and weeks to come~hoping all is well!! Best wishes! Doodle hugs from Sadie! Leane
Don't really know the answer to your question..........we're new to all this also. My Giada started having seizures this Summer and has had 4 :(

So sad this is happening to your sweet fur baby, but this group give great advice and support!
Thanks to all of you for the advice and support. The guardian angel website seems excellent. Have any of you seen improvements with dietary changes?

Thanks again,

John
Yes. GRAIN FREE seems to work best for Jasper. I make my own with raw meat and veges. Apparently ORIJEN is the BEST Grain Free dry food. I just can't get it here in Australia.
I do believe however it is the COMBO of Grain Free Diet, Taurine and Epi-Still supplements, that is making the success in Jasper longer spreading seizure breaks right now.
Here is a basic Recipe. Mine is a little different. If you are interested I can post it to you.

The basis of the BARF diet, as professed by Dr. Billinghurst should be as follows:
1)60-65% raw meaty bones or ground meat/bones (NO COOKED BONES!!!)
These can splinter and injure a dog
2) 15% vegetables (ground fine in a food processor)
3) 5% ripe fruit
4) 10% organ meat (offal) liver, kidney heart,
5) 5% other (eggs, table scraps, supplements
