Maple is coughing. She is happy, eating and pooping but coughing. It's a "hack" and about a third of the time she spits up a little white mucus-like foam. She is keeping her food down and drinking water. Anyone experience this?

thanks everyone.

Maple is slowing down and giving in to the illness, so she's coughing less. Wearing the thundershirt helps her relax. Lucky woke up with the cough today. I've taken the day off to attend to this. Hoping I can just pick up meds and not put two phlegm throwing dogs in my little SUV! We shall deal with it, whatever.

I have the girls sequesterd in the living room and kitchen. Buying the $200 "oriental" living room rug at Costco has it's benefits. It looks nice, is flat enough to keep the beach towels in place and who cares about a mishap on a cheap rug? ha!

I'm going to ask about how long this is contagious and if there is a threat of reinfection from the phlegm that is now in the backyard.

Also, hubby said there were only two other dogs (usually 8) in the obedience class when he took Lucky last night. She had a very good class with out distractions but I have to guess that there are other sick pups and they all got it there. I'm guessing the incubation period is 7 days like most human colds.
The vet will probably make you bring Maple in, but through a back way (it is so contagious). Lucky will probably get it soon also if she has not already. I am sure your vet will let you come back without bringing her in if she contracts it. My two guys got it last spring (Peri first - she goes to daycare; Tacky 7 days later) - both were vaccinated - with the antibiotics, they were back to normal within a few days. Good luck!!!!!!!!!
The Vet says to give them Robitussin DM twice a day and evaluate after 48 hours. As it's most times only a virus they don't want to administer antibiotics right away.
Yep, Lucky's got it too now and most of the dogs from the class, I'm sure.
Just watch the hacking. If the mucus continues and it is kennel cough, it can get really bad. It took my sister's dog 2 weeks to get over it. He had not been vaccinated. My two had and it went away much quicker.
Oh how I envy you that $200 Costco rug!!! Unfortunately I purchased one for >10 times that at the same store where I bought my LR furniture 4 years ago which my prior dog could care less about --- however, it must look like the "Great Outdoors" to Bosco who has taken to relieving himself on it (pooping no less!!!) since he was ill last week. EEeerrrrggghhhhh. (at least the colors make stains less noticeable but I need to find a good product to remove any of his marking odors -- any ideas? I've scrubbed, sprayed, etc but want to be sure he no longer finds any attraction to it).
Hope the cough med helps your pooches!
Yes...go on-line to www.xocorp.com

This is a concentrate odor neutralizer. At first it is a sickingly sweet smell but it goes away in a day or two. I keep a gallon of it on hand and you dilute it with water and keep it it a spray bottle. Everyone in our neighborhood uses it now! Even bathing the dog with it when they get skunked in the middle of the night!!! My new area rug was from Overstock.com and is also an Oriental rug. Our neighbor's dog got in through our open front door one day and had what started as poop and turned to diarrhea all over the rug. He didn't just do it in one spot but moved around. With the colors of the rug it was hard enough cleaning it up. The smell was through out the house. In fact, that is how I discovered it. Anyway...after I cleaned it up really well, I sprayed the XO all over the rug where he had been. The poop smell ended but I did have the sweet smell from the XO for a day or two. Well worth it though! I have a nose like a dog and hate odors! This stuff really works!
I noticed it is sold at Orchard Hardware near my town. I wonder if every Orchard H. carries it?
Have you tried Natures Miracle? If not, it is GREAT for this problem. It claims to eliminate all stains and odors -even urine ordors (reading on the bottle right now!!:) And it is natural (enzymes) and safe for children and pets. Of course you will need to test for the color fastness of your rug. I've used it for many dogs and cats over many years and it always works well. They even have a SKUNK formula that I had an "opportunity" to use once and it also works great!! :(
Yes, I used Natures Miracle when my cat would pee on the carpet. Cat pee is the worst! But, I usually had to use it a few times to really get the smell out. I also used it when Gracie Doodle was little but now I stick to the XO. I haven't experienced the skunk bath personally but my neighbor came crying for help for her 6 month old Doodle and I gave her the XO and it worked perfectly for her.
Oh Nancie, your experience with the neighbor's dog trumps anything that I ever had to use Natures Miracle for!!! (thankfully!! LOL!!!) It sounds like a winner!!
I went out at lunchtime to run an errand right next to PetSmart so I wound up going in there and bought Nature's Miracle "Advanced" whatever that means. Fortunately I'd gotten rid of any odors humans could detect but I'm afraid Bosco still sniffed his marking scent or whatever he left there that seemed to indicate to him it was an okay place to go. I have him back on his leash to keep better track of him now, too.
Thanks, Nancie, for the link to the website. I copied it into my doodle file -- in the what to do for the doodoo chapter!
Sorry to hear the pups are sick. Hopefully this will all pass very quickly!
