Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I read today in Dogfancy magazine that the Obamas are thinking about a goldendoodle for their family dog after the election, win or lose. I have heard that before, but the first time I have seen it in print. Wouldn't that be great - to have one of our own in the White House? Tiger Woods has a labradoodle, so we are all hanging with celebrities. Yeah for doodles!

Hi Michele:
This is exactly IDOG's thinking in promoting a rescue dog for the Obamas; to draw attention to the wonderful dogs who are in need of good homes while at the same time not causing "bandwagon' mentality, which as you pointed out, leads to more homeless dogs. IDOG would love to have people who may be connected to the campaign in some way put the idea forward. Sounds like your DH may be the one! Thanks!
I spoke with a doodle owner who is involved in the Obama campaign -- on the edges not close up. She thinks it is VERY far fetched for anyone not really close to him to influence him on this...
And yet he did pose holding "Baby", the 3-legged-puppy-mill rescue in Jana Kohl's book which promotes rescue & adoption, and speaks out very strongly against anyone buying any dog from a breeder...so I wonder if those are really his feelings, or was it just a "photo op?" Interesting...
Well I don't think that my statement and yours are opposed. It's just that in the middle of a campaign getting info to him that he'll really look at about what dog he should get...seems tough. He might believe in rescue/adoption...but maybe not in the same way and with the same strength and passion as you and Lynn and others involved directly. If someone came up to me and asked "hey do you believe people in such-and-such a country should have food?" I'd say "sure!" but I don't necessarily think about those people regularly.
Lol-I didn't think our statements were opposed, either. And I do like Obama. (Especially when I consider the other...oh, never mind!) I was a bit disappointed though, that during one segment of the DNC, there were examples of various Americans & the struggles they're going through, and the person chosen to represent a small business owner was a "pet-store" owner. I wish I still had the Kohl book, so I could look and see what his exact words were regarding the homeless pet issue, though...maybe one of his PR people will think what a great idea adoption would be if someone could just suggest it? (Hint, hint, anyone?)
Okay. I'll be quiet now.
I definitely like the idea of rescuing dogs that need a new home, but it is also fine to buy just the dog you want from a reputable breeder. Of course puppy mills and pet stores that are just in the trafficing of puppies for the money should be avoided. And the other thing is that ALL pets should be spayed or neutered so they do not add to the problem of unwanted puppies. Leave the breeding of dogs up to the breeders. But, I think it is wonderful that the Obamas are thinking about getting back to a normal (if that is possible) life after the election. And a goldendoodle puppy would be just the thing to help them on that course.
Hi Lynda:
i did not mean to imply that is wrong for anyone to purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder; the next dog who becomes a permanent part of my family will probably be a breeder puppy. (pet stores, as you said, should be avoided at all costs.)
Adoption is not for everyone; I just did want to make sure that people know that every dog who is given up has not lost their home because of something wrong with the dog.
This is so funny when our Sierra had her puppies at the end of June my husband wrote to Obama and offered to give him one of our puppies. I told him he probably wont even read your email who knows who screens his e mails. Boy will he be happy he will think he is the one who put the idea in his mind lol. I am glad he is leaning towards a Doodle there is no other way to go obviously they are the best. I have 4 doodles my self and not to leave out the rest 3 standard poodles and a Lab.
YEAH!!! Doodles are the BEST dogs around :) That would be really cool if Obama wins the election and brings a Doodle to the White House :) Can you imagine how popular they would become?
They actually had a whole story about this on Inside Edition. Obama did say he would like a rescue dog though but it is possible to rescue a doodle. My Sydney is a rescue and he is the love of my life along with my doodlebug.
