Hip Dysplasia - has anyone had the THR or FHO surgery for hip replacement on their Doodle?

My angel Abbey has no hip sockets at all.  I'm considering letting them give her the THR or FHO surgery, but would like to talk to anyone that has had these procedures done.  Did it solve the problem?  Does the THR really make them "brand new"?  Abbey has very little strength in her rear legs.  She never has.  I imagine the FHO simply relieves the pain, but won't give her any more strength or stability.  She's only 14 months old, I'd really love to give her new hips, IF I can afford it.  I"ve already talked to a specialist in my area.  $5400 a hip.  Whew that's a lot.

Any and all advice would be appriciated!

Abbey is so beautiful. What does your Vet say about the post surgery prognosis for her? I think your Vet is the best one to give advise about what you can expect after the hip replacement for your Abbey. I'm so hoping that something can be done for her.
Thank you! She truly is my soulmate! When we discovered this 4 months ago, my vet said he can do the THO, but suggested I go to a specialist, which I did. Basically we decided at the specialists that because Abbey was not showing any real signs of pain, that we would wait. I thought it would be a while, it's only been 4 months. The specialist said the hip replacement would give her 90% chance of being normal, a "bionic dog". He said the THO would relieve the pain, but not really make her "better". She's never been able to jump into the car, she struggles to get up on the couch, but she does, just slowly. I'd just like to get others experience with the surgeries. A guy my boyfriend works with said his dog was"normal" after the THO, but we don't know if that dog had the exact diagnosis Abbey does.

Whew, thanks so much for your kind words......they are our children, aren't they? Of course, I want the best for her, but wow, $11,000 for two new hips at this time is going to be huge for me. I"m just looking for information so I make the best possible choice for my baby.
Carol...our Beemer had the TPO surgery....we blogged his progress...so go to my page and read all about his adventure....at the time of the surgery my husband had just lost his job...so I know what you are saying about the expense....but the surgeon told us at the end of 5 months he would be like a different dog (all well....hair grown back!)....this was so true....Beemer was a pup (for the first time)...we just didn't realize the pain he was in....it was a long haul for us...and a real sacrifice....but worth every bit of time and money.....everytime he runs out in the yard....jumps on his sister....and gives us a wet sloppy kiss.....he is well.....good luck to you and Abbey....if you have any questions...feel free to ask....blessings....
Hi, Carol... I don't know much about Hip Dysplasia... I am so sorry to hear about Abbey's condition. My prayer will be with you and Abbey for something to come through so she can get the best treatment for her hips.
I'm sorry to hear about beautiful Abby. isn't your breeder going to help with the cost at all?
Thank you so much EVERYONE, for your information and prayers. We will get through this, and Abbey will be whole and pain free. Just need all input and information I can get before I make any decisions. I know I should trust my Vet. and I do, but he can only do the FHO......sadly I have a group (Doodle Messenger) that is trying to help me with the cost of her surgery, but needs a vet to accept the anonymous donations if we get any. The orthopedic vet that I say for the THR will not call her back.........what kind of vet is that? If he can't take the time to return a phonecall, I'm not sure I want him doing surgery on my baby. Research research research.
