Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

We picked up our adorable new puppy Ruby on Friday (medium red Australian labradoodle).  Such a cutie.  She's not loving the crate yet... last night she whined/cried on and off most of the night (the first night I slept with her on my chest most of the time, last night I had her in the crate next to my bed).  I took her out to potty about 4 times during the night, and each time I'd stick her back in the crate she'd protest hard for about 15 minutes and then whimper on and off for a while (and I'm not sure how long, because I'd crash).
Anyway, both last evening and this evening, she's napped a LOT, and she also took a couple of good long naps earlier in the day.
I remember with my kids when they were babies trying to limit their naps somewhat at first to get them sleeping through the night.  Now I'm wondering with the puppy whether I need to do the same thing.  We've had her outside for several good plays outside earlier in the day.
Today we've put a little effort into getting her to go into her crate voluntarily and then not shutting her up in it right away.  Hopefully tonight she'll be happier in there.
Anyway... what do you think on the naps?   Let her nap all she wants, or cut them off after a little while?

thanks,
Anita and Ruby

Owen is two months old. We got him at 7 1/2 weeks. He's 9 1/2 weeks now. The first four  nights he got up once or twice. Now he sleeps from 10 to 6. I saw the recommendation to have the kennel on the bed the first few nights. We put him in his kennel when he naps in the room we are in. I think the frantic crying is die to the transition to a new home without his littermates. Owen isn't doing that at all now. We only let him out of his kennel when he is quiet. Now we are having trouble with him chewing. It lasts only a short time in the whole scheme of things. Try to enjoy. .
Yes! Stick with the crate. Owen already goes into his crate to nap some of the time.
If it were me, I'd let them sleep however much they wanted if they were already sleeping (in other words, I wouldn't wake them) but do lots with them when they are awake. Plus as rambunctious as puppies get once they get comfy...you'll WISH you could get them to nap more later =)
The trainer that we are going to use told me that the puppies are very sleepy for the first 4 days or so. The stress of the new home, no litter mates etc tends to wear a little one out! I am a HUGE fan of crate training! It does get easier and the pup will come to LOVE it. Our last dog went into his all the time with the door open. They just feel safe and happy.
I get my pup on Sat. Its been a long time since we had a puppy! I am nervous! Ours is a mini red Australian also! Love your name pick! We named ours Lucy :)
Puppies sleep a LOT. My puppy is a little older, but he goes to bed at 8:00 at night and gets up about 7:30 in the morning. I take him out once during the night and he takes two naps usually during the day. Since you are an experienced parent, just remember what you did with the babies. Of course, check them when they cry out at night, but comfort and then leave alone. I think your mistake was letting her sleep on your chest the first night. Of course, she will try again for that. You may just have to let her cry it out. Suggestion, move her away from your bed so you can sleep. Let her nap all she wants because daytime naps do not keep a puppy from sleeping at night.
I got 2 puppies - and I let them sleep whenever they wanted! Too bad sometimes that didn't include 11:00 at night, but I figured it was like having a baby. We don't have kids, so they are my kids. It took about a month before they were getting on our schedule. And when they were asleep, I could pick them up to set them into their crate and they wouldn't even wake up.
