Well I took Floyd to see a Dermatologist this past Wednesday and he was
very helpful and great with Floyd. He told me that there is a small
possibility that he's itchiness could be food related because he falls
into the young food allergy window which usually goes up to 6 months old
and that the other age range for food related allergies usually doesn't
present itself till 3 years of age. Since Floyd is just barely 6 months
old and he has been dealing with itchiness for over a month now he
thinks we should start with food elimination first so we can be for sure
that it's not the case and then if it is we have discovered the
problem. He prescribed a different antihistamine than what our general
vet prescribed along with a mild oral steroid with a tapering dose.

The issue is Floyd is being neutered in just over a week and the doctor
was hesitant to have us change his food and administer oral steroids so
close to surgery and suggested that we postpone a couple of weeks. I
purposely scheduled his surgery for the week of Thanksgiving because I
will be off from work most of that week so I can be home for his first
few days of recovery which is really important since only one testicle
has dropped and he'll undergo more intensive surgery.

Anyway, we have opted to keep his surgery scheduled and will stop using
his treats and flossies and start to taper him off his food and wait to
start the steroids till after the surgery. The thing now is what food do
I go to. The vet prescription diet food isn't ideal and I did so much
food research and decided on Orijen and to now not be able to use it is a
bit frustrating! I started him on the new antihistamines and will get
some Evening Primrose oil and see if this combo helps him in the
meantime. Thank you all for your input and advice. Our allergy journey
continues!!

Thank you for sharing this information with us. Our thoughts are with you and Floyd... and wishing him a speedy recovery.
I'm confused. I understand not changing the food right now as it's only 2 weeks away for the surgery, but why can't you start changing over to the Orijen after the surgery? You have to transition over slowly and it takes a few months to even tell if the change is helping or not. Have you given him Fish Oil? Check out the Food Group. I know there are quite a few discussions regarding food allergies. Karen has great advice.

Good luck and keep us posted.
Carla,

Floyd is currently eating Orijen for puppies so I need to find another food that doesn't have the same ingredients. I am really happy with Orijen as a whole and did TONS of research with the help of the Food Group and landed on Orijen. Now I need to find another food that I am ok giving Floyd. Sorry for that confusion! I joined the Atopic Dermatitis Allergy group which was started by Karen and she has been very helpful. Thanks!
OK...I thought he was on something else and you wanted to put him on the Orijen. Have you looked at the California Natural Limited ingredients..Venison and Sweet Potatoe? I know they have other kinds too.

I just bought the Orijen Puppy today to transition over from the Retriever food ABD gives you.
I would but ever since the Proctor and Gamble acquisition of Natura products, California Natural included, I have been very weary of using that food. Once you know something it's hard to ignore it! I'm going to investigate this weekend! Thanks.
I forgot about that...ugh.
So sorry to hear about Floyd's frustrating situation. I hope you can get to the bottom of this mystery as soon as possible. I'm sure it's hard for you to see him so uncomfortable. I will be thinking of you both and sending lots of healing thoughts his way. Please keep us posted.
Hugs, Karen
