Rooney went to his first class last night of "Beyond the Basics".  He was taken out of the STAR Puppy Class before it started as the trainer thought that it would be a waste of my money given that Rooney had some basic training at his breeders.  I was concerned about an age difference and his attention span in the advanced class but agreed to try one class and then make a decision.

Walking in I was not feeling like this was going to have a good outcome.  There were 3 other dogs in class - all young but fully grown, all having been through a prior class.  A german shepard, a doberman pincher and somthing that looked like a spotted grayhound - big, big dogs.  Rooney - all of about 8.5 pds looks at me like I'm nuts.

Class starts and wow, the trainer made me feel better by explaining that the big dogs needed to not be allowed to crowd Rooney, so I started to relax a little.  Then like a real pro - Rooney went through the passes on leash with the best of him.  I was so proud.  Rooney has not been taught stay but got the hang of it pretty quick.  Then we learned wait, not sure that I feel this is needed if you know stay but what do I know.  Then we moved on to quick, quick for when walking on lease and turning with your owner and then in the other direction slow.

I don't know but I've had some pretty smart Labs and I am amazed at this little Doodle!  Aren't they the smartest things?  He was so quick to learn, so calm and did'nt let those big dogs keep him from what he was supposed to do.  I think our Doodles are the smartest dogs out there.  Yahoo Rooney.  I'm looking foward to training - it was fun, it was a challenge and he loved it.

And mommy can't type - lol.
That's great! Congrats! We use Stay and Wait at different times. And with these smart doodles, it is nice for them to learn the difference. We use Stay as "stay until I come back and get you." It usually lasts longer than a Wait would be. We use Wait in situations in Rally Obedience (and other types of obedience) where the stay is very temporary, and the dog will be running to me soon. For example, in Rally, there's a sign that tells you to sit your dog, run away from him while he is staying, and then call him to you while you're still running. I use Wait for that, because if I use Stay, he seems really confused when I run away and then call him. He has a look like, "Mommy, you told me to stay. This running away thing seems like a trick. I'm Staying until you come back to get me." Wait is also something that may help you get out of the door ahead of him, or give you a chance to put on his leash, or have him wait while you go down or upstairs first. Stuff like that where a formal Stay isn't really necessary. Other people with more obedience training will probably have a better explanation, but that's kind of how I see the difference.
Oh my gosh, this little fellow is chasing his tail right now - so funny! I just love this guy so much! I hope that I can learn what I need in order to train him correctly. I see what you mean by wait. We will be working on it.
I love it! What a fun adventure for you both, as well as quite the bonding time. Keep us posted! This sounds just perfect!
Glad things are going so well! I generally use ``wait`` when Gavin is standing - like before going through a doorway or getting into the car or going out the gate and ``stay`` when he is in a sit or down.
You're off to such a wonderful start with Rooney. Have you thought about Rooney as a Therapy Dog when he's a little older? He seems to have the right disposition for it, and he's a "quick learner".
Jane - I'm new to the Doodle breed and I really don't know much about Therapy Dogs. I'll have to educate myself but you are right - Rooney is a very, very calm puppy and quick to learn. He will just sit and look you right in the eye waiting for instruction, pretty amazing for such a young little Dood. Thank you for the suggestion. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Jane
