For the past week or so Oliver has had loose stools...He is eating fine, drinking well, playing and being totally himself. He is not running to go out more frequently, he is going poop once or twice a day, just loose. If I add pumpkin or rice he is fine, but when I stop he reverts back. He is not sick, or at least I don't think he is. He eats TOTW roasted fowl, and loves it. He has been on this for quite some time, no problem. As far as treats, he gets no grain ones, or an occasional dog biscuit, 1/2 of a small size one. I have been cutting treats way down. Don't think they really need them everytime they come in from going out. I do give a small piece of cheese occas. or a slice of apple or carrot, any suggestions...would be greatly appreciated...

If the loose stools coincide with cutting back on the treats, maybe there was some added fiber or bulk he was getting from the treats that he's not getting now?
That is interesting Karen, I cut back on those because of the loose stools, what is good for bulk or fiber that is healthy for them?...I really am not happy with all the store bought treats...
Well, of course I don't know what kind of treats they were; I was just looking for any changes in eating patterns that occurred around the same time. But not all store bought treats are created equal...you have anything from pure garbage to very high quality products.
Fiber is a funny thing- it works both ways. If a dog (or a person) isn't used to getting fresh fruits & vegetables, and is used to a diet of more processed foods, introducing these healthy alternatives can cause temporary diarrhea. But it usually resolves after the digestibve system adjusts. Sudden increases of higher fat foods can cause diarrhea, too, especially if the dog or person is used to a very low-fat diet. The fact that the pumpkin or rice is helping makes me think it isn't an illness, it's just that his system seems to need more fiber or bulk. But I'm just guessing.
Jack does occasionally go through periods of looser stools for no reason i can see. But if it keeps up, i think I might talk to the vet and maybe even have a culture done to make sure something else isn't going on. In the meantime, there's nothing wrong with giving pumpkin, except for the fear of running short of it, lol!
The treats I was giving were dried apple slices, baby dog biscuits ( I know they are not good) but my 14 yr old aussie has eaten them forever, and Oliver only got 1/2 of one when I gave them. He never got loose stools from either of those things. I do use a kong with peanut butter, but he has had that before too..I use cheese, he has had that since he is a puppy...I think maybe I will try some yougurt in his food, non fat of course and see if that does anything...If this keeps up I will take him to the vet to get a stool sample checked...He just doesn't seem sick to me...The only other thing I can think of is that I have caught him chewing and eating acorns that have fallen off the trees...He sneaks them in his mouth and hides them from me, But we try to check everytime he goes out and comes in, but he is so smart he hides them around his mouth, lol..Could it be that he is eating these and it is upsetting his stomache?....
Oh, yes, acorns could definitely be causing this! Major indigestible plant cellulose!
aha, well we will have to try and prevent this for sure...Who would believe that we live in south Florida and have an Oak tree next to our driveway!!!... And he has to go on our driveway to go out and come back in the house. Thanks Karen, I knew you would help me along with others here...
You really are going to have to prevent it...I just looked it up, and acorns are toxic to dogs.
Jac yells at me every time she see Charli munching away on them. I can't stop her! She just likes the smallness of the them and chewing. Glad they have finally been blown out with all the leaves.
Lucky you they are gone, I am going to have this for about a month down the road, ugh....If the tree was on my property and not my neighbors, I would cut the thing down....But I am guessing my neighbor would not be too thrilled with me. It is not that I don't like trees, I am a nature lover, but not when it can hurt my fur baby....
OMG, that is all I need, I am now so upset, this tree is nowhere near ending dropping acorns, Both Ira & I will have to be so careful..Ugh, never a dull moment around here....Thanks for the info Karen, better to be informed and handle the situation before something happens...
I was worried about acorns also, but so far no problems. Harpo likes to chew on them and hear them crunch and pop, but he doesn't seem to be swallowing them. We have oak trees all around our house and a female tree on the deck. We try to keep the deck blown off, but there always seem to be acorns around, especially during the fall season.
Rua has been going from firm poo to diarrhea to loose poo to diarrhea to firm...you get my drift. Her food is Puppy Orijen (no grain). I was giving her a few treats that had grain (cherrios, kong treats, and another one) and, when I really wanted to keep her quiet, a pig ear strip. She really loves those. After giving her that, Saturday, she was really loose on Sunday. So, I have stopped all of those a few days ago. Gave her pumpkin yesterday...again tonight. Hopefully we will have some solid poos again soon! It is really hard to do poo clean up! LOL
