Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I found this ad today on the local Craigslist!!! So sad!!  :(

I don't really have a desirable car that people would WANT to steal but I didn't know that VW Beetles were either!!! We don't leave Tara alone in the car at stores even for a minute!!

Hope he finds his way home soon!!

I found another post the family put up on Craigslist in the LOST and FOUND section:

They are offering a reward and seem to care less about the car, they just want the furkid back.  One interesting point though is that in the first post they called him a Labra-Doodle and in this one a Goldendoodle?? WTD?? Maybe they did it to cover all the search options?

WEDNESDAY EVE UPDATE:

It appears the car has been found but not the doodle. :(  I know what you are thinking, Karen!!!

I might be less paranoid if Tara was a larger doodle. Small dogs are very much in demand in this area. The local Humane Society has a bus and makes trips to California to rescue small dogs from kill shelters and adopts them out locally. They can't keep up with demand.

There are frequent reports of small dogs being stolen out of their back yards, etc.. Cases where the dog's "owner" has caught the person in the act. So these dogs are not running away or getting out on their own.

Consequently I think that has raised my concern level about Tara. I have always had larger dogs in the past and always left them in the car with no problems.
For all anyone knows, the doodle was let out of this car in the parking lot before it was stolen, and ran off or got lost.
Yes, if the person just wanted to steal the car I would think they would have gotten the dog out of it early on.
I don't think it is irrational at all. Many doodles are so people friendly that they would trust a stranger even if you were not there and that would make them easy to walk away with. The doods are most definitely a desirable dog right now and many people don't want to pay the price or know they can make some money selling them. :(

Many people on DK have said that they have been offered good money for their dogs. So if they are desired enough for someone to offer money for them then there is probably someone out there who wants them just as badly but doesn't want to pay!

Yes, I am a bit on the paranoid side when it comes to my doodle girl!!
Think there is a 'bootleg' doodle business?
Yes, there is a doodle black market or is it a black doodle market? :0

I don't know if people are stealing them to keep them or to sell them. Probably both. I know one was finally tracked down to CA and had been sold to a person there. :( It was some other small breed though not a doodle.
There was a Boot Leg Doodle Theft Ring at Ohio State University about 5 years ago. Truth

When people were asked, " What kind of dog is that", they would respond with anything but Labradoodle because the thefts were so bad. I have never heard any more though.

I am often reluctant to respond to this question also. I owe no one an explanation and most often--I don't give them one.
I understand completely. I have taken my dogs to the office. However the office is small and the dogs are now a bit much there. I do of course lock my car when the dogs are in it. Sometimes I leave the front windows open a crack to give them air although that's usually not an issue since I only leave them when it's cool and not for long. However, I have worried about kids harassing them or somebody throwing a lit cigarette into the car. These are just random thoughts and nothing remotely like this has ever occurred. I don't think I'll stop taking them with me but wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where we just have to worry about all this or in doggy dreamland as you say.
Of course. I always lock it. I wonder if, perhaps, he got the dog to jump out before he drove the car away.
I was googling and found this: http://www.wisebread.com/how-to-get-your-car-stolen

By the way, where does it say that the car was unlocked? I couldn't see that in the original link.
That is an interesting link! Yakima Washington?? That was a surprise!!

I didn't say the car was unlocked but I did say (in a reply) that it is very common in this area for people to leave their cars and HOUSES unlocked. So the odds are great that it was not locked but I can't say for sure.
I see...I thought perhaps I'd missed some news info posted elsewhere about this incident.
