Hello all, I feed Hunter Canidae All Life Stages.  Can anyone tell me exactly how much per day she should be eating?  She eats 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup at night - the vet says she isn't overweight but she does have a little excess...  She is going to be 2 in February and weighs 54lbs right now.  I didn't know how much her metabolism would slow down since she is getting close to 2 now.......

Ok I swear I looked all over that website and couldn't find it! LOL Sometimes I am technically challenged!!!
What I really have to watch are the treats. I can give Halas the exact amount of food that I'm supposed to, but I also need to keep in mind how many treats I'm giving him. For the last 6 weeks or so, we were going to a Rally Obedience class to prepare for a trial. So that added to his treat total. It added to his activity, too, so that may have helped even it out, but I didn't even consider that I might need to slightly adjust his food to make up for that. I think their metabolism slows down a little in the colder temps, too, but I'm not sure when age starts to factor into it.
The two cups is just about right, and you still have room, calorically speaking.
Hunter should be getting roughly 1250 calories per day to maintain her current weight. (This is an average for dogs her size & age, and could certainly vary) Two cups of the canidae ALS formula contain 936 calories. Of course, that's assuming you're measuring exactly one cup, to the "one cup" marking and not to the top of the cup...I was making that mistake, and Jack ended up getting an extra cup of food per day between his two meals!!!!
I don't think there's much diference metabolically between a one yr old doodle and a two yr old doodle. The old wive's tale has it that three is the age they finally start to calm down and become truly mature, but I wouldn't put much stock in that. If their activities and exercise levels remain the same, so will their metabolism, at least for many years.
If you want her to lose a little weight just feed her a little bit less. Over time she will lose. If you think she is perfect but don't want her to gain, feed her just what you are feeding her. If you give her lots of treats you need to realize that they have calories and you might need to cut them down or out. Let the scale be your guide.
Gracie Doodle is 3 1/2 and she eats Acana and she gets 1 1/2 cup in the morning and 1 1/2 cup at night. She doesn't eat all her breakfast until about 4 PM but usually finished her dinner. The only treats she gets are the dried chicken jerkey but just a few each day. She has maintained her weight for two years at 72-75 lbs depending on the weather and exercise. When she is wet she is a skinny boney girl. When you pat her you can feel her spine and ribs. Gracie is not a food motivated Doodle at all...only tennis balls for her!
Ok, so it sounds like she is getting the right amount - I do sometimes give her a "fuller" scoop but I use a one cup measuring cup and try to be accurate. She doesn't eat a ton of treats - believe it or not her FAVORITE is ice cubes LOL Not much calorie content there!
