I have two dogs. Vern loves to cuddle and practically sits on top of you to get close. Fudge is much more aloof and independent, but I cuddle her every chance I get. She is just not an "in your face" cuddler like Vern. I always tell everyone to get a kiss from Fudge means you are really special. Fudge usually lays at the end of the bed too and often wants down to lay on the cold floor. Like people, they are all different. Fudge also does not like Vern to be to close at bedtime. I think doodles get hot easily and that could be another reason why she moves to the end of the bed.
I was thinking the same thing as Laurie, that your dood could be getting too hot on the bed to lay close to you for a long period.
I wouldn't call it aloof, aloof is more like a dog that doesn't care if you are in the room or not.

I personally like to sleep without my husband right next to me, I can't get comfortable with someone breathing on me even after 16 years of marriage. She just wants to be comfortable.

I saw others mention the heat thing and just an FYI a dog's core temperature is 101 compared to our 97
Hunter is a lot like that. She loves to cuddle on her terms and only when she wants to. She does prefer to sleep either on the love seat or the bottom of our steps which is the coolest place in the house. Hunter seems to go through phases where sometimes she is more cuddly than others. They are all so funny!!
Jack won't even sleep on the bed with me, most nights. He prefers the floor next to my side of the bed, or his own bed in my room. I think it's because he also gets too hot in my bed. He is not a "cuddly" dog, either. Perfectly normal. Just like with our children, we can't dictate their personalities or have expectations in that regard. You can train for good behavior and obedience, but not temperament or "personal" preferences, they are all individuals, and we need to love them for who they are.
My doodle Buddy is the same way. He lays between my husband and I while my husband rubs him and then he gets up and goes to lay on the bedroom floor. Now that it is colder he does get up sometime during the night and jumps in our bed but is sleeping on my legs. He is not cuddly either.
Peri only sleeps on the bed if my husband is out of town. She likes her own space and really prefers the floor anyway (or her bed on the floor). She is not the cuddliest doodle, but that's okay with me. She would rather be right by our feet or within eye distance - I think they get hot!
Allie isn't a cuddly dog AT ALL. She will lay in my bed for about 5 minutes at the most... Yesterday I got on the floor with her and she let me lay with her for about 10 minutes and I was thrilled. But it doesn't happen very often!!!!

I remember a discussion awhile ago about this and it seemed like the Male dogs cuddled so much more than Females!
My SIL has a pug and he is off the charts cuddly. It is their goal in life--I believe they were bred for it. My doodle is hopelessly devoted to me but only wants body contact for maybe a total of 20 min a day/night. (Scratches and rubs seem to have no time limit...)
Yes, pugs were bred specifically to be lapdogs, all the way back in 400BC in China. This is why it's important for people to research a breed before getting one, and not just go on looks or the fact that someone they know has one and it's a great dog. They need to look at what the dog's natural instincts are, what they were originally bred for. If someone wanted a dog primarily to have a cuddly, affectionate companion, none of the sporting breeds, including doodles, would really be the best choice. Sure, most of them are sweet and good-natured, but the primary purpose of all of the parent breeds, even the poodles, was never to be a snuggly household companion.
Yes, I'll admit I had no idea standard poodles were considered watch dogs. I guess with a recent rash of burglaries in my area, I should be grateful. Porter may already have discouraged attempts on our home. He takes his job so seriously.
Tara is kind of funny about body contact. If I am sitting on a chair with no room for her to be NEXT to me she wants to sit on my lap. If I am in a larger chair that has room for her NEXT to me, she will lay next to me but not ON me. If I am on the couch where there is a lot of extra space she will lay clear down at the other end most of the time. Go figure...
