Hi all, I am shopping this week for the best toys and chews for my new puppy Patti Cake that I am picking up on Friday this week!! Any suggestions of what your pups really liked and chew? Any special toys that hold their attention for play? Thanks everyone!
Well, I would recommend several things: bully sticks are wonderful chews for pups, but be careful that they are odor free (Moo brand are definitely). Also, when I need to crate Emma for longer than an hour, I fill a small Kong with peanut butter or low-fat vanilla yogurt which I then freeze (it takes a longer time for her to eat it so it keeps her busy). The other toy she loves is the Chase-It toy, which you can find online. It's basically a stuffed squirrel attached to a fishing pole-type gizmo. Emma loves to play with it in the yard and it definitely helped to get some of her puppy energy out, especially in the first couple of weeks when she really couldn't interact with other dogs. Hope that helps. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
Hey, I never knew bully sticks came odor free!!!! We've been suffering for over a year, as they're Scrappy's favorites. I've held off giving them to Grover yet because of the horrid smell. ( He has gotten hoofs though...still smelly.... and loves those.) I usually get Merrick or Red Barn, from my grain store. Were do you find Moo brand??
Thanks a bunch.
Hi Christa, I agree with what Diane said about the bullies, my Sadie loves them and since she is just 15 weeks old, a 6 inch bully lasts her quite a while. They are great for them to chew on while teething.
She also really likes to chew and play with her stuffed animals with squeekers in them. She has a dog, a long skinny Loofa dog, a pig and one that is a dog but not stuffed. Kind of looks like a dishcloth with a squeeker inside lol.. she loves playing with those. I also got her a knobby ball, about 5 ins in diameter. She will toss it and chase it down the hallway.
I think a variety of different types is good to keep them occupied and not bored. She switches often. One that seems to be her favorite one day is hardly played with the next.
Have fun with your new baby and we expect a lot of pictures.. lol
Our Wrigley also likes to play with/chew on different toys. She has a few favorite squeakers (She has one rabbit that looks simply like a long rabbit skin - I think that "Skinneeze" or something like that is the brand.) She likes her Wubba toy, loves her Kongs when they are stuffed with kibble, cheese, etc. For real chewing, her favorite is a big hollow sterilized bone.
We got her a "Snuggle Puppy" which I know helped her to sleep through the night from the very beginning. She still sleeps with the puppy, but when she has excess energy she'll drag it out of her crate and chew it, shake it, throw it, etc. So funny!
Wrigley is now 16 weeks old and she's just such a joy!
I could always ONLY use Kong toys my Mocha destroyed everything...believe it or not even a puppy Kong!! I actually just tried something the other day - lasted for whole 5 minutes I think...not sure why I keep trying?? Not sure what a bully stick is though...I'm gonna check into that myself. Thanks!!

Have you tried the black kong toys? They are for tough chewers I think.
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions! I went shopping today and got many of your toys. The bully sticks are great. I asked at Mounds Pet Food Warehouse where we get our supplies here in Madison and they had them in a bin. I tried one out on my 5 year old golden and she loved it. I also got a few plush squeeky toys and some rope toys and two different kongs. I will post pictures after I pick her up on Friday.
We can't give Chapin plush anything anymore - the last two I bought didn't even make it through the night before huge pieces (an ear, a leg) were missing. But he prefers fabric to rubber, and the hard ropes are his favourite.
Sadie definitely loves her Kong stuffed with just about anything and frozen. She will chew on her kong even if it doesn't have anything in it now. She loves stuffed tows and plastic toys with squeekys in them - however you do have to watch thoose as they grow up because they will tear them apart.
I think Sadie's all time favorite toy though is her tennis balls. If only I knew I didn't need to spend money on all the other things! She will play for HOURS with her ball even if we aren't throwing it for her. She's gotten to where if she can't get me to throw it she'll go out and throw it for herself and chase it. Plus a tennis ball is a great way to get out some of that puppy energy!
We just brought home our goldendoodle pup this past Monday, and so far her favorite seems to be a stuffed animal type duck. It was the favorite also of my past lab mix. I think she will like stuffed animals in general, but this is a pet toy and I feel it is safer because it has no eyes to tear off and swallow or choke on. I cannot remember what they are called, but have seen them in PetSmart and other places with pet toys. She is not interested in her Kong so far. I put one of those puppy chew stick things (made by the Kong co.), but she's not impressed with it so far. I will have to try the freezing and other fillers. She also is not interested in the nylon bones(even with several flavors available). She was a little interested in latex squeeky toys, but not like the duck. She has a rope toy that she likes pretty well. she loves playing with my son and a tennis ball. I'm trying to rotate them around. The breeder suggested not giving digestible types of chewies, because they may have sensitive tummy issues. My dogs have never really liked the nylon type though so far.I don't know anything about the odorless bully sticks, but I bet my beagle would love them. My beagle (not a pup) loves some chews soaked in something to help with tartar on their teeth. They are C.E.T. HEXtra, bought at the vet office and a little pricey, but the beagle loves them so much that I will only give them to him AFTER he eats his dinner - I think of it as brushing his teeth before going to bed at night.
Enjoy your new pup! We are loving our little girl. She plays and sleeps all thru the day so far (napping in my lap right now). I am making sure that my kids play with her after school in the evening before bedtime, since I've heard a tired puppy is a good puppy.
funny story - my old dog used to be so sweet, he'd be really careful with squeak toys. He would hear them squeak and be afraid he was hurting them, lick them, and then ever after pick them up VERY gently. He'd chew the non-squeaky end and use them as a pillow. Note: he was also very good with baby anythings - kittens, chicks (we used to have a picture of him with little chicks walking and sitting all over him), bunnies =maybe he was not normal.
