I don't normally buy my dogs chew 'treats' -- they have all been more than happy gnawing away at their sterilized real bones and the tough Nylabones.  So I don't really want to fix what's not broken. I am of the 'buy them a bunch of things that last nearly forever and forget about it' mindset.

I also don't like giving them any other animal 'parts' to munch on besides the sterilized bones. Rosco, for instance, makes such a nice wet spot under wherever he is chewing even a bone that the thought of him making bully stick saliva juices on my rugs ... blech!

But so many of you swear by antlers so I want you to tell me about them.

  1. Do they have ANY odor?
  2. Are they 'clean' enough so my daughter can pick one up and if she puts it in her mouth (because she might) I don't have to worry? (I realize that anything that the dogs have been chewing on and has gone in and out of the house has potential to be germy...but I'm just wondering about antlers specifically).
  3. Do they get slimy at all like bully sticks?
  4. Is there residue left on the dog's paws after chewing or on the rug?
  5. Does it shed little shavings?
  6. Do they last a considerable time or are they something I have to buy every few weeks?
  7. Have ANY of your dogs gotten diarrhea or upset tummies from them?

Thanks so much!

I bought Rua a smaller one (6") a month ago to try it out after all of the "talk" about them.  It still is the same size...though I can see indents from her little teeth.   I think everyone has already answered all of the questions.  We we had our other Doodle, I gave her Bully sticks (ICK - slimy, smelling, had to confine her for chewing to a towel)...won't give Rua those, so that is why I tried the antler (we did the Antlerz).  She loves it - will take it out of her "toy box" and chew on it.  I love it...no mess, no smell.  I'll tell you what...you are much better off if Natalie picks up the antler and chews on it than the bully stick!  LOL

Okay follow up question!

Which of you who LOVE Antlers(z) have also given your dogs the strong/tough Nylabones and was there any difference in their ability to demolish either?  Because those and real bones are the only things my dogs get to chew on (save for kongs and a few other rubber toys that are rarely touched).

  1. Do they have ANY odor?  None that I can percieve...
  2. Are they 'clean' enough so my daughter can pick one up and if she puts it in her mouth (because she might) I don't have to worry? I think it would be as clean as any thing covered in doggie slobber ;o)
  3. Do they get slimy at all like bully sticks? Not slimy at all!
  4. Is there residue left on the dog's paws after chewing or on the rug?  Nope!
  5. Does it shed little shavings?  Nope!
  6. Do they last a considerable time or are they something I have to buy every few weeks?  We've had a few that have lasted a year!
  7. Have ANY of your dogs gotten diarrhea or upset tummies from them?  No - and Hershey has a sensitive tummy...

Hershey has had a few nylabones as well, and there's always pieces that she swallows from them.  Definintely demolishes them quicker.  With the antlers, it's more like she's just slowly grinding them down...

We actually have an elk farm close by, so I go an buy bits and pieces of harvested antler from them - like the kind people would buy to do craft projects with... I guess people do crafts with antlers out here in western PA...

Daisy has a Nylabone, she never touches it.

Banjo still has the same nylabone he got as a puppy....it's held up well but he isn't as interested in that as he is in the antlers.    I consider Banjo a strong "chewer" and am satisfied with the length of time one antler lasts.   I also love that they seem to really help keep his teeth clean AND I understand they also provide minerals that are beneficial to him.

Buddy didn't show much of an interest in the nylabone at first, then one day he started chewing it and got pieces of it off.  I worried and took it away from him.  Still the Antlerz is holding up!

Is this the Nylabone for strong chewers and not one of the wimpy ones? Boca LURVS her Nylabones.

Daisy has had Nylabones throughout her existence, all kinds...still she just doesn't like them much to my chagrin....especially before we got the antler. I wanted her to have something to occupy her, but nothing seemed to fit until the antler. She got her first one for turning 1 much to the glowing remarks on DK.

My dogs love nylabones and in fact it is one of the two things Clancy and Gordie argue over.  We have a really old one that has finally been chewed into a bar rather than a bone shape and don't know the flavor it was. When Ned was a pup we bought the flexible ones and he went through them quickly. Nylabones for strong chewers and hollow bones both last much longer than an antlers. But I still love the antlers.

Dear Nancy,

Kona chewed up the first medium sized antler I bought in 20 minutes. I just ordered XL from Antler Pantry after asking the owner about this. She told me to request the most dense antler when I ordered. I hope this works. We never had chews for Kona. Since we got Owen in Oct, he has to have chews or will destroy the house. Sadly, Kona just destroys every one.

Please tell me about hollow bones. Where do you get those and do they make a mess. I love that the antlers are so clean.

Callie just shows no interest in her Nylabones.

Antler Pantry all the way. They last a life time. They are not slimey, They do not smell.
