Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
I only wish I had been a member of DK and this DIY group a few months ago because I would have taken pictures of the gates we made when Maddie was confined to smaller areas of our home and when she was only allowed access to the bottom floor.
I wanted something cheap (or free) but also something pleasing to the eye (instead of those big clunky baby gates) so I advertised on a website (Kijiji) for a free wooden spindled baby crib. I had several replies. Since then I have seen several being thrown out at the side of the street on garbage day.
I took the crib apart and ended up with 2 side rails, 2 railed end pieces and 1 bottom railed piece the mattress rests on. The end rails will have to have the legs cut down.
I cut down the side rail so it would fit across our stairs - I stuck the little chair leg pads (used for wooden floors) on the raw edges so they wouldn't scratch the wall. I then slid the homemade gate between the stair rails and pushed it over to the wall. Voila a beautiful wooden doggie gate that matched our wooden staircase, slides in and out easily and no hardware screwed into your wall or staircase.
The bottom rail of the crib was placed over the small back yard pond I have - just for safety sake and so Maddie wouldn't drink the pond water (she tried).
You can also use the side rails to block doorways - just cut to fit snuggly between the door jams and just make sure to use the chair pads on the ends so walls or woodwork doesn't get marked.
Maddie no longer needs any gates but I did pass them on to someone through an ad who was getting a new puppy and they were looking for baby gates.

Fantastic idea. The old cribs have just been outlawed and are no longer sold. I heard on the news the other day that all cribs with drop down sides are very dangerous and are being pulled from the market permanently. I bet there will be a lot of good used cribs available to people who want to make your gate!
Really clever and I agree with Nancie, there should be a lot of free cribs around. Beats making one from scratch like I did.

Although I still might like to attach the crib railing if I were to do one.
