Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

A "discussion" I had about breeding, "cross breeding"..Doodles and Puggles... Left me very confused!

Hi! I wasn't sure if there was a group out there I could put this in..I'm not that educated on this topic. I'm a waitress at a diner owned by a Pug breeder (yes the diners theme is Dogs..hah), like most small diners theres always a debate going on. The other day my boss and his daughter were telling me stories about their pugs and Puggles came up. Jamie said he had taken one in a couple years back as a foster, but said he was never surprised when he saw Puggles, Labradoodles, and other mixes because people got them and then didn't want them. That they we're "bastards"because they were man made, that if it were up to nature a pug and a beagle would never mate..which is true...but if it weren't for human intervention..we wouldn't even have dogs.

He went on to say that this "cross breeding" of dogs (he, of course, used Poodles and Labradors as examples) was destroying the breeds and their standards, because when you mix two different breeds you never know what you will get. He said, "When you mix twp pure bred fawn pugs, you get a pure bred fawn pug. When you mix a poodle and a lab, you don't know what you'll get. When you mix two unknown fractions of poodle and lab with another unknown poodle and lab..who knows what you will get!" I really didn't know what to say (and was still a little hurt that he had called my Sami a "bastard") he added that he didn't doubt the dogs ability to love and learn but..idk I guess he just doesn't think this "cross breeding" is a good idea..

Now, I know that dogs today aren't because some caveman grabbed a wolf pup and started feeding it..it took thousands of years for a different type of "wolf" to evolve and become desensitized to humans and what not. I would assume that dogs like Pugs..Dobermans..German Shepards..are some mix of evolving cross breeding and all that..so..ugh what Jamie said confused me! To the point I'm not even sure where to start my questions..

My grandfather breeds Australian Labradoodles, next year I hope to really start playing apart in the whole process, I'd like to think we are apart of something good! My love for Doodles stems for my love of all dogs and animals in general..

I'd really love some opinions..I'm trying to learn all I can about dogs and breeding before I start school and start helping my grandpa..

Thanks for all the replies, I knew he was wrong but after reading all this, I'm thinking "DUH" haha. Jamie is..Jamie I guess..
Now about breeding, I totally agree that anyone looking into getting any breed of dog should do a TON of research on not only breeders, but of the dogs themselves! My grandparents were introduced to Australian Labradoodles and fell in love, they're one of the only breeders in the area that I know of and believe me, the dogs are bred out of nothing but love. Yes they make a profit, and yes, everyone should "opt to adopt", but when that isn't an option a breeder who really cares about every puppy and its future and can provide a safe loving environment for all their dogs and puppies is THE only acceptable standard.
