We have had a ton of discussions on this topic, including some recent ones, in the main forum. Unfortunately our search feature is down/broken so there is no way to do a quick word search for the term "insurance". However, if you have some time and just flip backwards through the main Forum through many pages, I'm SURE You'll find some Insurance discussions from the recent past.
Also the Doodle Messenger (a site that helps spread the word about and raise money for doodles with medical needs and lost doodles) has partnered with Pet Plan (I think?) to offer doodle owners a discount (while they get some $ toward their program). That was also recently discussed in an announcement from the Doodle Messenger -- ALSO in the Forum on the main page.
Here's a great link: http://petinsurancereview.com/reviewStart.asp
Quite a few of us have PetPlan. We have the bronze plan.
Good luck and get it soon. It's when you don't have it that you need it!!!
I recently checked in to insurance. You can go to: http://petinsurancereview.com and get the insurance companies that would suit your needs. They ask for your location and age of dog, etc. They gave me 7 insurance companies to check into. The ones you mentioned, and then some! I looked at the pros and cons of all of them, and their reviews. Some offered preventive health and many did not. None of them cover pre-existing conditions, but at 4 months, that is likely not an issue. It is quite a bit more expensive to go with preventive, and we did not choose that. We went with PetPlan. The bronze plan was very adequate. It goes bronze, silver and gold. We went with the silver plan, as it had a higher amount total covered than bronze. Gold covers upwards of that, but we decided to just go middle of the road.
I just purchased insurance for my new puppy from Embrace. They have regular pet insurance and you can add on preventative care. I already submitted my first preventative claim for her new puppy visit. The insurance resembles people health insurance so you have a clear understanding of what will be reimbursed. Plus they will cover some genetic conditions.
Good Luck!
