Yikes - we measured Rooney's hair today - it is 4 inches on his body and 3 inches on his head!!!!  Wow - that is really long.  He is only 5 months old.  How long is your doodles hair?  How long should we let it get or will it just stop growing?

Funny...I just measured Simon's hair yesterday. He is looking like a cream-color bear cub! :-) I have trimmed his head so you can see his eyes, but the rest of his hair is 4+" long. I kept his hair long, brushing it every night, until he reached about 10 months old. Then the coat changed started! I couldn't keep up with the mats so I had to have his hair cut down. Much easier to take care of (I had him cut down the last time 8/10/10), but his hair has been growing long and it is starting to mat again. Good shampoo, conditioner and high end grooming spray work wonders. :-) This is a picture of Simon BEFORE his coat change started and BEFORE his first pro haircut.

I think doodle hair can grow up to about 6"...although I could be wrong. :-)

Again, Rooney is a total doll!

Wow - beautiful!!!!!!  I am so dreading the coat change - sounds very scary.  The only matt that Rooney gets is right under his chin so we just keep that spot shorter.
He might not have a coat change. Huff never really did. It just grew out longer and now it doesn't mat much but when it does it mats under his arms, the insides of his legs, behind his ears, around his collar, around his harness, and sometimes in between his toes. If he didn't wear his collar or harness he would hardly mat at all!:) He has never matted around his chin or around his moustache.
You might be right. I see a difference too but he never had a horrible coat change either. Well maybe Rooney will have a gradual, unnoticeable coat change like Huff!:)
Gorgeous coat!
What a beautiful doodle!:)

He is SO beautiful I would not cut that hair until I had to!!!

We gave Casper his 1st haircut last spring...when the weather started warming up.

Rooney you are precious!!!

Rooney looks great - his colouring is spectacular!
From someone who loves it long... I say let it grow... we let it grow until we feel mats and then she goes in to the groomer... but I was actually thinking of going a bit shorter b/c of her romps in the snow.  YES!  Beware of that dreaded coat change!  It happens over night!  It's terrible!  Tori didn't go thru' it until about 14 months.

Rooney's sooo cute!

We let Misty's grow to 6 inches!!! She was very hot even though the weather wasn't that hot and I felt bad for her, so we cut it.  She was 7.5 months old.  Now she's 10 months and I just cut it again - 'cause the dreaded coat change is happening and she's matting for the first time.  I hope she gets through it quickly.

I say let it grow 'til there's a reason to cut it.

He is so stinkin' cute!!!!  I like them with the long hair.  His coat may change and begin to matt.  Some doodles matt and others not so much.  Coco is 8 months now and has only matted slightly under her ears where seem to pet her the most.  She loves her ear rubs!  Good luck!  Rooney is adorable!

Rooney's coat is so stunning long, but I bet he would be gorgeous at any length. Stella, who is 6 months has hair about 3-4 inches long. We did a little practice clipping yesterday on her belly and took it to about an inch, we figured if we did a hack job it wouldn't show there ;-) She is starting to get little tangles around her arm pits if we don't stay on top of it with brushing.
